KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Regis men's and women's tennis teams opened their Spring Break competition schedule against Division II school Cedarville University, with both Pride squads losing to the Yellow Jackets, 7-0 (men) and 6-1 (women), Monday at the Oak Street Park Community Center.
Playing under Division II rules, the winner of the majority of the doubles sets received one total point, and the doubles sets were played like normal tennis sets (first to six points) instead of playing until one team reached eight points. In both cases, Cedarville swept the doubles sets, but in the women's match, Regis' number two doubles team of Carly Donovan (Harwich, Mass.) and Lauren Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) forced a tiebreaker at 6-6 before eventually losing the set.
The only point for the Pride came at number five singles in the women's match, as Ginger Boodakian (Burlington, Mass.) defeated Halie Hardwick in a super-tiebreaker, 10-6, after the players won one set apiece. At number four singles, Katelyn Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) won the first set, 7-5, but Cedarville's Olivia Ancil rallied to win the second set, 6-3, and then the super-tiebreaker to take the match.
The closest match on the men's side came at number two singles, as Regis sophomore Johnny Pallotta (Bay Shore, N.Y.) recovered from losing the first set, 6-3, to win the second set by the same score. However, he could not complete the comeback, as Matt Brumbaugh clinched the match by winning the super-tiebreaker, 10-6. With the team victories, the Cedarville men remained undefeated so far in 2018-19 at 8-0, while the Yellow Jacket women improved to 5-3.
Both Regis squads are scheduled to play two matches Tuesday, March 5, starting at 8 a.m. against Penn State-Berks at the USTA National Campus in Orlando, Fla. The Pride will then return to the Oak Street Park Community Center to face King's College (Pa.) Tuesday evening at 6:30 p.m.
