WESTON, Mass. – For the second straight year, Regis College has qualified for the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Tennis Tournament and will host Suffolk University in a first round match Wednesday, Oct. 17, starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Regis Tennis Center.
The Pride enter this year's tournament as the fourth seed after finishing fourth in the GNAC regular season standings with a 4-3 league record. They will face the Rams, who defeated Simmons Saturday to clinch the fifth seed with a 3-4 conference mark.
As a team, Regis combined for a 25-17 (.595) record in singles and a 12-9 (.571) mark in doubles during conference play. Five Pride players won four matches apiece in conference singles competition, including senior Katasha Jarvis (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.), who became Regis's all-time leader in singles victories with her 46th career win against Clark's Elizabeth Garfield on Oct. 4.
In doubles, Carly Donovan (Harwich, Mass.) and Katelyn Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) were a perfect 5-0 in conference play, while Kaeleigh FitzPatrick (South Windsor, Conn.) and Lauren Mogelnicki (Wethersfield, Conn.) posted a 4-1 record. Jarvis is close to another school career record relating to doubles, as she and Ariana McCormack (Worcester, Mass.) are one win away from the Pride record for most career doubles wins by a team.
Last year, after earning a bye, the second-seeded Pride lost to third seed Simmons in the semifinals, 5-1. Donovan won her match for Regis's point. Regis did win five consecutive NECC Tournament titles from 2012 to 2016.
The Rams have reached the GNAC Tournament for the 16th consecutive season, winning the tournament title in 2007. Last year, Suffolk entered the tournament as the fourth seed and defeated Saint Joseph (Conn.), 5-1, before losing to top seed Johnson & Wales, 5-0.
Suffolk is led by Ilda Ascic, who posted a 9-4 overall record in the number two singles position and has won five straight matches. Jordan Miller also finished the fall with a winning singles record at 7-6. In doubles, Ascic and Delaney Dunlap have occupied the number one position throughout the season, earning a 7-6 record.
This will be the 16th meeting all-time between Regis and Suffolk, with the Pride owning a 9-6 series advantage. On Sept. 19 at North Reading High School, the Rams won two of three doubles sets, but then Regis swept the singles for a 7-2 victory.
The winner of the Regis-Suffolk match will travel to the Winchester Indoor Tennis Center Saturday, Oct. 20, to face top seed Colby-Sawyer in the semifinals beginning at 2:00 p.m. The GNAC Tournament championship match will also take place at the Winchester Indoor Tennis Center Sunday, Oct. 21, starting at 12:30 p.m.
