WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) women's tennis team trailed after doubles and again late in singles but rallied on the strength of freshman Carly Scanlon's (Canton, Mass.) comeback victory at five singles to beat Suffolk 5-4 Tuesday night at the Regis Tennis Center.
The match was previously scheduled for this past Saturday but had to be postponed during doubles play due to inclement weather conditions. The two teams retook the court picking up where they left off. Erica Murphy (Portsmouth, N.H.) and Emily Rice (Pittsfield, Mass.) had won their doubles match at the three but the Pride trailed on the one and two courts.
Suffolk (1-3) would go on to cement those two leads and take a one-point lead heading into singles play. Jessie Lord (Fall River, Mass.) and Ariana McCormack (Worcester, Mass.) fell at the one, 8-3 and Scanlon and Katasha Jarvis (Mt. Vernon, N.Y.) were narrowly edged by Suffolk's Aidiana Sagyndykova (Almaty, Kazakhstan) and Elena Cisneros Garci (Barcelona, Spain), 9-8 (7-2) on the No. 2 court.
The match hung in the balance on the five singles court where Scanlon had to rally from a set down to Danlyn Medou (Inglewood, Calif.) to take the win 3-6, 6-1, 6-4. The stage wouldn't have been set for Scanlon's match-clinching win if not for McCormack's win on the No. 3 court. McCormack topped Garci in straight sets but erased an 0-4 deficit in set two to complete a 6-0, 6-4 victory.
The Pride retake the court this Saturday, Sept. 17 hosting its conference opener against Becker at 12:00 p.m.
The Rams return to action this Thursday, Sept. 15 at Bridgewater State. Start time is set for 3:30 p.m.
