WESTON, Mass. – For the second straight year, Regis College and Colby-Sawyer could not decide their league contest in regulation, and the Pride once again scored the game-winning goal in overtime to defeat the Chargers, 2-1, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer match at Regis Stadium.
After gaining possession midway through the first overtime period, Regis drew consecutive corner kick opportunities, with two shots by Emily Lange (Ashland, Mass.) just missing the net. Colby-Sawyer committed a foul, and Noelle Garcia's (Los Angeles, Calif.) free kick eluded both her teammates and the Charger defense, bouncing over the goal line into the net for the game-winning tally.
Colby-Sawyer took early control of the match, but a shot by Leah Dupuis was stopped by Regis goalie Ori Attridge (Westwood, Mass.) and a scoring chance from Molly MacLure sailed left. On a counterattack in the 12th minute, Kaylee Francis (Millis, Mass.) raced up the field with the ball and beat Charger goalie Sam Mitchell for her second goal of the season.
Midway through the first half, the Pride picked up their offensive intensity, taking six shots in a six-minute span, but most of them were off-target. Faith Montgomery (Abington, Mass.) created a scoring opportunity in the 40th minute, but Mitchell was able to make the save, keeping the score 1-0 in Regis' favor at halftime.
Colby-Sawyer (2-4, 0-1 GNAC) started keeping possession of the ball in the second half, first creating consecutive shots for Thea Alberti and Grace Walsh that were turned away by Attridge. Midway through the half, Attridge came up with two more key saves off shots by Abby Hamelin and Brenna Humphrey.
In the 79th minute, MacLure raced up the left side of the field and then sent a pass across the box to Dupuis, who converted on her scoring chance for the game-tying goal. Mitchell kept the Chargers in the match in the final 10 minutes of regulation with three saves, two off shots by Lange and one resulting from an opportunity created by Brianna Gaynor (Peabody, Mass.).
The Pride outshot the Chargers, 24-11, led by Lange with seven total shots. Mitchell ended up with nine saves in the match, while Attridge collected six saves for Regis.
Regis (2-2, 1-0 GNAC) will face Curry College Sunday, Sept. 15, at Regis Stadium starting at 12 noon. Colby-Sawyer also plays a non-conference match next, traveling to face Plattsburgh State Tuesday, Sept. 17, for a 6 p.m. kickoff.
