Women’s Soccer Loses Home Opener to Emerson

WESTON, Mass. – The offense of Emerson College proved to be too much for Regis College, playing its second match in as many days, to handle, as the Lions defeated the Pride, 5-0, Sunday evening in a non-conference collegiate women's soccer match at Regis Stadium.

Emerson (2-0) outshot Regis, 31-4, as the Lions continually put pressure on the Regis goalkeepers. Oriana Attridge (Westwood, Mass.) started the match and made five saves in the first half before being replaced at halftime by Angie Caldwell (Goffstown, N.H.), who made seven saves in the second half.

The Lions started the scoring in the eighth minute when Amanda Benavente stole the ball, raced up the left side, and sent a crossing pass into the box, where Grace Cosgrove collected the ball in front and sent it into the back of the net for her first goal of the season. In the 20th minute, Jess Frost made a move to get free on the right wing and blasted a shot past Attridge for her third goal of the season to give Emerson a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Midway through the second half, Elizabeth Noble corralled the ball in the box and sent it towards the net, with Paige Haley redirecting in into the net for her first goal of the season. Less than six minutes later, Benavente found herself one-on-one with a Pride defender, made a move to get past her, and scored her first goal of the season.

As time wound down, the Emerson reserves continued to advance the ball into their offensive zone, with Mallory Hanson picking up a goal in the 89th minute off an assist by Jennifer Van Pelt. Less than 30 seconds later, Van Pelt attempted to score a goal of her own, but Caldwell read the shot correctly and made the save.

Megan Rose picked up her second victory in as many matches in net for the Lions, playing the first half and making one save. Sophia Giordano replaced Rose after the halftime break and was credited with one save of her own.

Regis (1-1) concludes its stretch of three matches in four days with another home contest, welcoming Eastern Nazarene to Regis Stadium Tuesday, Sept. 4, for a 7 p.m. kickoff. Meanwhile, Emerson hosts Tufts Wednesday, Sept. 5, starting at 6 p.m.
