Women’s Soccer Tops Mount Ida In GNAC Opener

NEWTON, Mass. - Freshman Emma Mendes (Pawtucket, R.I.) scored in each half to lift the Regis (Mass.) women's soccer team a win in the school's first-ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference game, a 3-0 win at Mount Ida Wednesday. The Pride even its record at 1-1 (1-0 GNAC) with the Mustangs suffering their first loss to fall to 2-1 and 0-1 in GNAC play.

The game was the first GNAC contest for any Regis sport and was won in convincing fashion. Mendes (Pawtucket, R.I.) added to her freshman year account with two goals, one on either side of the halftime whistle.

Mendes gave Regis the lead when she rocketed a ball over the head of Mustang keeper Kyla Bragg (Sanford, Maine) in the 37th minute, then doubled the advantage with a knuckler from the right side at the 56:05 mark.

Payton Fitzgerald (Danielson, Conn.) got her first collegiate goal just before the 70:00 mark, becoming the first Regis player not named Emma Mendes to score this year.

Freshman keeper Kyrsten Drake (Loganville, Ga.) made four stops and kept a clean sheet for the first time this season.

Mount Ida was outshot 20-4, with all four shots coming in the opening half. The Pride had a 6-4 edge in corner kicks, including a 5-1 advantage in the second half.

Regis continues GNAC play at 1:00 pm Saturday with another road game at Saint Joseph (CT).

Mount Ida returns to non-conference play on Saturday afternoon with a 2:00 pm game in Leicester against Becker College.
