ABREU LEADS PRIDE TO 3-0 WIN OVER NIGHTHAWKS

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Regis College women's soccer team defeated Newbury College, 3-0, in New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) action on Wednesday afternoon. Pride junior forward Kristen Abreu (Woburn, Mass.) registered two goals, including the game-winner four minutes into the second half, to lead Regis to their eighth victory of the season.

Regis came out of the gate strong, offensively, attacking the net early on but the Nighthawk defense remained poised. First year Nicole Kaufman (Miami, Fla.) and sophomore Sonya Theriault (Nashua, N.H.) kept the Pride off the scoreboard with their stoic defense and kept the game scoreless going into the break.

When the teams returned to the pitch at the start of the second period, the Pride continued their offensive attack. Four minutes into the half, Abreu pounced on the lose ball five yards out along the nearside and knocked it into the back of the net to break up the stalemate.

Six minutes later, sophomore Sam Salamone (Milford, Mass.) gave the Pride an insurance goal after connecting with first year KC Camacho (Arlington, Mass.), two yards out, to take the 2-0 advantage.

With seven minutes remaining in the contest, Abreu knocked her second goal of the contest past Newbury sophomore goalkeeper Elizabeth Fox (Orono, Maine) off a corner kick from junior defender Jackie Rocheville (Salem, Mass.).

Newbury falls to 4-9 and 3-5 in conference action while the win improves Regis to 8-6-2 and 5-2-1 in the NECC. The Pride will close out the NECC regular season on Saturday, traveling to Bennington, Vt. for at 1:00 p.m. tilt against Southern Vermont.
