WELLESLEY SNEAKS PAST REGIS, 1-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. - Emily Wilson's (Portland, Ore.)74th-minute goal pushed the Wellesley College soccer team to a 1-0 win over Regis College on Saturday afternoon. The win lifts the Blue to 2-4-0, while the Pride suffer their first loss, going to 2-1-1.

After 73 minutes of scoreless action, Wellesley's Lena Cardoso (Seattle, Wash.) attempted a cross that was deflected by a Regis defender. Wilson won a chase to the loose ball, centered it and launched a high shot into the top right corner of the net for her first goal of the season.

The Blue recorded eight shots on goal in the first half, but Regis' starting keeper Rachel Gagnon (Ashford, Conn.) turned away all eight attempts to keep the Pride in the game. Regis had their best chance early in the half when a third-minute shot from Nora Bosteels (Canton, Mass.) was saved by the Blue's Claire Cerda (Coral Gables, Fla.).

Regis had another great scoring chance in the 59th minute, when forward Kristen Abreu (Woburn, Mass.) broke through the defense and created a one-on-one with the keeper. Her shot, however, squirted just wide of the goal, keeping the team off the board.

For Wellesley, Cerda needed just one save to record her first shutout of the season. At the other end of the field, Regis' Gagnon was solid in goal, recording 12 saves.

Wellesley held the advantage in shots (17-4), while also edging the Pride in corner kicks (5-2).

Regis next plays on Tuesday, Sept. 17 when they head to Eastern Nazarene for a 7:00pm game.
