WESTON, Mass. - Sophomore attack Kerri Anselmo (Natick, Mass.) recorded five goals and three assists as the Regis (Mass.) women's lacrosse team defeated Massachusetts Maritime 20-4 in non-conference action Saturday afternoon at Regis Stadium.
The Pride's win is its first of the season, as the team improves to 1-1 overall. Mass. Maritime falls to 1-2 with the defeat.
The Buccaneers got on the board first on the afternoon, as freshman Casey Sullivan (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) scored her fourth goal of the season at the 1:40 mark on a feed from senior Stephanie Hunt (Brookfield, Conn.), giving the guests a 1-0 lead early. The Pride would respond in a big way however, as freshman Cheyanne Jones (Randolph Center, Vt.) leveled the score with her first collegiate goal at the 3:55 mark. Jones' goal was the first of eight straight goals scored by the Pride in just under 11 minutes to take a commanding 8-1 lead midway through the half. Anselmo completed a natural hat trick with the Pride's second, third, and fourth goals, all coming just 2:38 apart.
A goal from Regis freshman Rachel Nadeau (Coventry, Conn.), her first collegiate goal, rounded out the big first half for the Pride with 43 seconds showing on the clock. Nadeau's goal gave the hosts a 13-3 lead heading into the break.
The Pride continued to control the play once the second half began to secure the victory. Junior Emily Kosak (Milton, Mass.) and sophomore Brooke Ross (Hanover, Mass.) eached netted a pair in the wrap up the win.
Anselmo's hat trick was one of three the Pride recorded on the afternoon, as Kosak and Jones each found the net three times in the win. Ross, junior Malorie Kiehl (Burlington, Mass.), and freshman Bella Oliver (Sagamore Beach, Mass.) each finished the day with a pair of goals for Regis as well. Sullivan led the Buccaneers with two goals on the day, while Hunt and freshman Anna Deely (Marstons Mills, Mass.) each added single goals.
Senior Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.) got the win in net for the Pride, recording five saves. The loss went to Mikayla Correia (Dartmouth, Mass.) for the Buccaneers, despite making nine saves.
Next up for the Pride, the team will head to Johnson & Wales on Tuesday for its first ever Great Northeast Athletic Conference game. Mass. Maritime will look to return to the win column in its home opener on Wednesday night with a 7:00 p.m. matchup against Newbury College.
