BENNINGTON, Vt. – Eight unanswered goals to close out the first half made way for the Regis (Mass.) women's lacrosse team to take a 12-4 road victory over Southern Vermont College Saturday afternoon in New England Collegiate Conference women's lacrosse action at Everett Field.
The Mountaineers tacked up the first goal during their Senior Day, but the Pride came back to bring an 8-1 lead into the halftime break. SVC went on a 3-1 run to start the second period and cut it to a 9-4 game, but Regis was able to hold off the hosts the rest of the way while gaining some separation for the win.
The Mountaineers' (6-5, 4-2 NECC) next scheduled game is on Thursday when they host Mitchell College for a 4 p.m. NECC start. Regis (12-3, 7-0 NECC) is set to host Newbury College on Tuesday—that league tilt slated to begin at 4 p.m.
Regis freshman Kerri Anselmo (Natick, Mass.) put up three goals and two assists while sophomore Taylor Assarian (Arlington, Mass.) had another three goals and an assist. Junior Linsay Bumila (Raynham, Mass.) chalked up seven ground balls, a goal and four draw controls as sophomore Mackenzie Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) notched a goal, an assist, and three ground balls.
Orrell scored twice on Saturday while adding six draw controls, four ground balls and three caused turnovers to her line. Lesure had the other two Mountaineer goals and four ground balls as Nesshoever tallied an assist and four ground balls of her own in the effort.
Junior Pride keeper Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.) made eight saves and reeled in a team-best eight ground balls in the win while SVC junior goalie Kristiana Goldup (Schuylerville, N.Y.) made a pair of saves while suffering the loss (5-5) with the start. Mountaineer sophomore netminder Sydnee Julian (Mexico, N.Y.) went in goal for the second half and registered seven saves.
In a rematch of the 2016 NECC Finals, both teams squandered chances through the opening five minutes. Orrell was awarded a free position shot at the 25:18 mark and made the most of it to get her team on the board with the slim advantage. The 1-0 score stood through the next five minutes before the Pride got its offense rolling.
Playing with a man down, Anselmo fed sophomore Emily Kosak (Milton, Mass.) for the equalizer; Anselmo potted her 48th of the year just 29 seconds later for a lead Regis would keep until the final horn. Assarian beat the keeper twice through the rest of the half while assisting on another goal for the Pride to take a comfortable 8-1 upper hand into the break.
After a first half penalty carried into the second stanza, Lesure found the back of the cage for a man-up goal to make it 8-2 only 25 seconds after play resumed. Anselmo answered at the 24:46 mark, but Orrell and Lesure would notch back-to-back scores to make it a five-goal difference with 13:04 left to play.
Assarian completed her hat trick under the 10:00 mark, and Anselmo then did the same to help the Pride pull away and run out the clock to remain undefeated in league action.
