Women's Lacrosse Falls Short against Simmons

WESTON, Mass. - Simmons College sophomore Missie Maiewski (Northampton, Mass.) tallied four goals on Sunday afternoon to lead the visiting Sharks past the Regis (Mass.) women's lacrosse team 14-10 in non-conference action at Regis Stadium.

With the loss, the Pride drops to 9-2 on the season, while the Sharks improve to 5-6.

Maiewski's hat trick was one of five split between the two teams on Sunday, as Ana Giarrusso (Hingham, Mass.) scored four goals and Mallory Cottam (Hope, R.I.) had three for the Sharks. For the Pride, freshman Kerri Anselmo (Natick, Mass.) led the way with four goals and an assist, while junior Nicole Roche (Waltham, Mass.) scored three goals.

The Sharks took a 6-4 lead into the half, before the Pride came back to tie the game early in the second period. Emily Kosak (Milton, Mass.) and Linsay Bumila (Raynham, Mass.) scored 43 seconds apart for the Pride in the first five minutes of the second half to even the score, but Cottam and Giarrusso each scored minutes later to give the Sharks back the two-goal edge. Anselmo scored back-to-back just two minutes after to even the score at eight with 19:19 remaining, but Maiewski took over from that point on.

Maiewski scored four of her five goals in the final 14:29 of the second half, leading the Sharks on a 6-2 run over that span to claim the victory. Late Pride goals from sophomore Mackenzie Cattarruzza (Guilford, Conn.) and Roche proved to be too little to late, as Simmons came away victorious.

Chyenne Yeager (Indiana, Pa.) was credited with the win on the afternoon, turning away 10 shots for the Sharks. Junior Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.) picked up the loss, making seven saves in the losing effort.

Next up for the Pride, they will return to New England Collegiate Conference action on Wednesday evening by hosting Wheelock at 7:00 p.m. The Sharks will next play the same day and time on the road against Johnson & Wales.
