Women's Lacrosse Tops New England College In Home Opener

WESTON, Mass. – Brooke Ross (Hanover, Mass.) tallied two goals, Kerri Anselmo (Natick, Mass.) added three assists and the Regis (Mass.) women's lacrosse team topped New England College in its home opener Thursday at Regis Stadium. The Pride improves to 2-0 while the Pilgrims drop to 0-1 with their season opener.

Six Regis players got in on the goal-scoring action with Emily Kosak (Milton, Mass.) and Mackenzie Cattaruzza (Guilford, Conn.) each recording one goal and one assist. Tara Bainbridge (South Hadley, Mass.) provided the attack for the Pilgrims with three of her team's five goals.

Maresa Malcolm (Barrington, N.J.) posted four saves in earning the win with Pilgrim goalie Mackenzie Meegan (Phoenix, Ariz.) recording nine saves.

The game looked to be a runaway for the Pride who went up 6-0 with 5:22 to play in the first half. Kosak and Cattaruzza scored and assisted on another to help Regis to the big lead. Bainbridge would get her team back in the game with a pair of goals including one just before the halftime horn to cut the Pride lead to only four goals.

The Pride regained the momentum early in the second half. Anselmo connected with Ross twice within a nine second span as Regis went up 8-2 and looked to possess the ball and burn some clock.

NEC would slowly chip away at the lead beginning with Bainbridge's goal with 22:56 to play. She would assist on two more but that would be all Malcolm would allow the rest of the way as Regis held on for the victory.

Regis next takes the field at Mass. Maritime Wednesday, Mar. 8 with NEC back in action Tuesday, Mar. 7 hosting Simmons College.
