BOSTON, Mass. – Regis College fell behind early and could not cut into Emerson College's advantage as the Lions defeated the Pride, 85-66, Saturday afternoon in a non-conference women's collegiate basketball game at Bobbi Brown and Steven Plofker Gym.
Jordyn Striggles (Raynham, Mass.) led all players with 17 points, plus she earned two assists, one block and two steals. Courtney Doherty (Willimantic, Conn.) contributed 14 points with three rebounds, and three steals, while Jillian Perry (Melrose, Mass.) collected 11 points with six rebounds and two steals. However, no other Regis player reached double figures in scoring as the Pride struggled offensively.
Regis took a quick 2-0 lead on a jumper from Striggles before Emerson took the lead for good by scoring the next 16 points, half of them coming from Jessie Silk, to lead 16-2. Regis collected three additional points before the Lions increased their advantage with three free throws and a layup from Charlotte Levison. The Pride closed out the first quarter with a three pointer from Perry followed by a good free throw to trail, 27-11.
The Pride outscored the Lions in the second quarter 14-10 while shooting 6-for-17 from the field at 35.3 percent while Emerson shot 5-for-17 from the field at 29.4 percent while collecting 10 points for the quarter, increasing their lead 37-25 heading into halftime.
Regis increased its offensive output in the start of the third quarter going on an even 10-10 scoring run with the Lions featuring a layup and jumper from Doherty, followed by a three-pointer and good free throw from Bella George (Lynnfield, Mass.), while Erika Marinelli (Point Pleasant, N.J. ) made two free throws to bring the Pride within 12 points of the Lions at 47-35. The Lions increased its lead to finish the half with a 16-6 scoring run, shooting 7-for-10 from the field and 2-for-3 from the three-point line to lead 63-41 at the start of the final quarter.
The Pride started the fourth quarter with a 10-5 scoring run with Doherty collecting seven of those points followed by Striggles with a three-pointer. Both teams battled for the remainder of the quarter, however, Emerson controlled the rest of the quarter with a 17-15 scoring run to finish with a final of 85-66.
Bri Frongillo led the Lions with 20 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds while Kendra Dodd contributed 15 points, three rebounds one assist and one steal for Emerson. Overall, Emerson shot 87.5 percent from the free throw line, 50 percent from the three-point mark and 51.5 percent from the field.
Regis (0-8) is set to travel and face MIT on Thursday, Jan. 2 at 3:00 p.m.
