Women’s Hoop Cruises to Fourth Straight Victory

FITCHBURG, Mass. – Regis College returned to the .500 mark with its fourth straight victory, defeating Fitchburg State 67-43 Tuesday evening in a non-conference women's collegiate basketball game at Parkinson Gymnasium.

Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) led a well-distributed offensive attack with 12 points on 5-of-7 shooting from the field. In total, 11 players scored for the Pride, with Arie Searcy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) collecting nine points, six rebounds, and two steals, Taylor Iorfino (Monroe, Conn.) earning eight points, and Pam Gonzalez (Revere, Mass.) finishing with seven points along with team-high totals of seven rebounds, five assists, and three steals.

Regis took a 6-1 margin on a bucket from Veasey before Fitchburg State cut the lead to 6-4 on a jumper by junior Mishelle Logie and a free-throw from senior Catherine Coppinger. The Pride went on a 7-0 run to end the first quarter, capped by a Marissa Prall (Hopkinton, Mass.) bucket for the 13-4 advantage.

In the second quarter, Regis extended its margin to 22-7 as Searcy connected on a pair of free throws, but the Falcons answered when senior Emma Thomson drained a three-pointer to cut the deficit to 22-10. Thomson drilled another trey to the make the score 29-15 before the Pride closed out the first half scoring on a Shannon Kelley (Quincy, Mass.) jumper for the 31-15 edge going into halftime.

Following the intermission, Regis upped its advantage to 42-22 by going on a 7-4 run, keyed by a trey from Mackenzie Emery (Standish, Maine) before the Falcons responded with a three-pointer from junior Samantha Maglione to cut the Pride lead to 44-29.

With an 8-0 run midway through the fourth quarter, the Pride pushed the lead to 61-38. The Falcons closed out the game with a pair of free throws from Angelina Marazzi, including her 1,000^th career point to become the 12^th player in Fitchburg State history to reach that milestone.

Fitchburg State (1-7) was led by Marazzi with a team-leading 14 points, while Maglione added nine points off the bench. Coppinger had a game-high 12 rebounds, but the Falcons lost the overall rebounding battle, 37-28, and shot just 34 percent (16-of-47) from the field.

As a team, the Pride shot a season-best 48.1 percent (26-of-54) from the field, but just 52.2 percent (12-of-23) from the free throw line. Regis scored 29 points off 28 Falcon turnovers as it allowed less than 45 points for the third straight game.

Regis (4-4) returns to Higgins Court next Monday, Dec. 2, to host Wentworth for a 6 p.m. tipoff. The Pride also host Framingham State next Thursday, Dec. 5, also at 6 p.m. before closing out the 2019 portion of their schedule at Eastern Nazarene Saturday, Dec. 7, starting at 1 p.m.
