Women’s Hoop Loses Non-Conference Contest

LEWISTON, Maine – Regis College lost to Bates College, 61-31, Tuesday night in a non-conference women's collegiate basketball game at Alumni Gym.

Sam D'Angelo (Woburn, Mass.) led the Pride in scoring with seven points, while Valerie Martin (Derry, N.H.) finished with six points. Arie Searcy (Santa Rosa, Calif.) and Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) tied for the team lead with seven rebounds apiece as Regis equaled Bates in total rebounds, 43-43.

After Bates opened the game with a 6-2 lead, Maura Russell (Braintree, Mass.) hit a three-pointer to pull the Pride within one at 6-5. The Bobcats put together a 9-2 scoring run thanks to the combination of Julia Middlebrook and Taylor McVeigh to end the first quarter with a 15-7 advantage.

The two teams traded points through most of the second quarter before consecutive baskets by Taylor Iorfino (Monroe, Conn.) and Veasey cut the Regis deficit to six at 25-19. However, Meghan Graff hit two free throws late in the quarter to increase the Bates lead to 27-19 at halftime.

Bates (9-10) dominated the second half, scoring 17 points in each quarter while holding Regis to 12 total points after halftime. One key stat throughout the night was turnovers, as the Bobcats scored 24 points off 20 Regis turnovers, but the Pride could collect only six points as Bates turned the ball over just nine times.

Graff led the Bobcats with 17 points, while Erika Lamere hit three three-pointers to finish with nine points along with seven rebounds. McVeigh collected seven points, nine rebounds, and two assists, and Middlebrook contributed seven points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

As a team, Bates shot 35.4 percent (23-of-65) from the field, including 6-of-25 from behind the three-point line, and 90 percent (9-of-10) from the free throw line. On the other hand, Regis hit just 20.8 percent (11-of-53) of its field goal attempts, including 1-of-8 from behind the three-point line, and 61.5 percent (8-of-13) from the free throw line.

Regis (7-13) returns to conference play with a road contest at GNAC newcomer Colby-Sawyer Thursday, Jan. 31, at 7:30 p.m. The Pride start a three-game homestand Saturday, Feb. 2, against Rivier beginning at 3:30 p.m.
