Katryna Veasey Named GNAC WBB Rookie of Week

WINTHROP, Mass. – After leading Regis College through a stretch of three games in five days, highlighted by the team's first victory of the season, Katryna Veasey (Quincy, Mass.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

Veasey, in her first season with the Pride women's basketball program, shot 8-of-15 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line to lead the team with 19 points in Regis's 76-71 victory over Fitchburg State last Tuesday. She collected 13 of those points in the second half as the Pride rallied from a seven-point halftime deficit, plus she pulled down nine rebounds.

Thursday at Framingham State, Veasey scored 10 points, including eight points in the third quarter alone, and grabbed nine rebounds. Saturday against Southern Maine, she notched her first career double-double on the basketball court, finishing with 13 points and 10 rebounds, plus she dished out four assists and blocked one shot.

Through the first seven games of the season, Veasey leads the Pride with 11.0 points and 7.6 rebounds per game and currently sits ninth in the GNAC in rebounding. She has reached double figures in scoring five times and has earned at least five rebounds in all but one game so far this year.

Veasey is no stranger to GNAC honors, as she has been voted All-GNAC in volleyball in each of the last two years. She is coming off a record-setting volleyball season, breaking the Regis single-season records in kills with 346 and kills per set at 3.36, plus she needed just two-and-a-half years to become the Pride's all-time kills leader, collecting 859 kills through the past three volleyball campaigns.

This is the first GNAC weekly award for a Regis women's basketball student-athlete since Feb. 12, 2018, when Brittany Stone earned her sixth GNAC Player of the Week honor of the season. Veasey becomes the second Pride player to receive GNAC Rookie of the Week recognition since the school entered the league, joining Nikki Bitinaitis (Cromwell, Conn.), who received the honor Jan. 22, 2018.

Regis will return to action for the Clark Holiday Classic, facing the host Cougars Saturday, Dec. 29, at 3 p.m. and Wellesley College Sunday, Dec. 30, at 2 p.m.
