Stone Grabs 1,000th Rebound, Women's Basketball Falls at St. Joseph's

STANDISH, Maine – It was a night to remember for senior forward Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) who collected her 1,000th career rebound, but no so much for the Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team who fell to Saint Joseph's (Me.) 66-45 on Thursday night in a matchup of the Great Northeast Athletic Conference's top two teams.

Stone led the Pride (12-8, 10-2 GNAC) with 14 points and 13 rebounds for her 14th double double of the season. Sam D'Angelo (Woburn, Mass.) tallied 10 points, four rebounds and a pair of steals.

Emily Benway (Rochester, N.H.) led the Monk effort with 14 points and 12 rebounds with Julia Champagne (Brunswick, Maine) adding 14 points on 4-9 shooting in three pointers to go along with seven rebounds and five assists.

The Monks led early but Stone's and-one bucket evened the game at 14-14 just over a minute into the second quarter. The Pride would go cold from the floor but only trailed by two when Nikki Bitinaitis (Cromwell, Conn.) broke the drought with a three-pointer. St. Joe's would extend the lead to eight points and head to halftime up 27-22.

The Monks essentially put the game out of reach with a dominant third quarter, outscoring the Pride by a 23-12 margin in the penultimate frame while shooting 53.3% (8-15) from the field. After not attempting a shot in the first two quarters, senior forward Regan McFerran (Albany, N.Y.) paced the Royal Blue with six points off a 3-3 shooting effort in the third period as the hosts headed into the final quarter with a 50-34 cushion.

The Monks extended their advantage to a game-high 23 points (64-41) when sophomore guard Julia Quinn (Fryeburg, Maine) hit a pair of free throws with 3:12 remaining in the contest.

The Pride returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 3 for Senior Day in a non-conference matchup versus Becker at 1:00 p.m.
