Women's Basketball Drops Road Contest To UMass-Dartmouth

DARTMOUTH, Mass. - Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) recorded a double double with 18 points and 12 rebounds, Nikki Bitinaitis (Cromwell, Conn.) added a season-high 15 points but it wasn't enough as the Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team fell 76-57 to UMass-Dartmouth Sunday at the Tripp Athletic Center.

The game, rescheduled from Thursday due to the snowstorm, saw the Corsairs (9-2) turn a tie game at the end of the first quarter into a 14-point halftime lead. The difference would swell to as many as 25 points in the fourth quarter as UMD cruised to the win.

Stone's double double was her seventh of the season with Bitinaitis connecting on only a game-tying three pointer to close the first quarter, but going a perfect 12-12 from the free throw line. Melissa Rogers (Billerica, Mass.) added 12 points.

UMD was led by a monster 23-point, 14-rebound performance from Nakira Examond with Alicia Kutil adding 25 points on 12-19 shooting.

All indications were that a good game was in store after a closely contested first quarter. Neither team led by more than two points until a Danyel Gonzalez three pointer put the Corsairs up 17-14. Bitinaitis responded with her three ball as time expired.

UMD set the tone for the rest of the game outscoring the Pride (4-6) 23-9 in the second quarter. Rogers' three pointer tied the score at 20-20 with 8:01 to play, but a 12-0 run by the Corsairs over the next 5:26 helped them to a 40-26 halftime lead.

Regis went nearly half of the third quarter before scoring its first basket on a Stone layup but not before UMass-Dartmouth extended the lead to 49-28.

The Pride puts its undefeated league record on the line this week, hosting Lasell in GNAC action on Tuesday, Jan. 9 at 7:00 p.m. UMass-Dartmouth next plays at Eastern Connecticut this Wednesday, Jan. 10 at 5:30 p.m.
