Stone Equals Season High, Women's Basketball Edges Framingham State

WESTON, Mass.Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) delivered a monster performance with 33 points and 18 rebounds to lift the Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team to a hard-fought 83-81 win over Framingham State in non-conference action Thursday at Higgins Court.

Stone was nearly unstoppable and capped her performance with a bucket with 10.4 seconds to play. Regis (4-3) had the ball after a timeout with 24 seconds remaining and called Stone's number down in the post for what proved to be the game winner. FSU (4-6) wouldn't get the look it wanted, missing on a three pointer as time expired.

Raegan Mulherin (Baldwinville, Mass.) scored a game-high 37 points in 5-13 shooting from beyond the arc for the Rams. Emily Velazo (Tewksbury, Mass.) had 14 points, six rebounds and six assists with Mallory DeFeo (Arlington, Mass.) adding seven points and a team-high 10 rebounds.

Sam D'Angelo (Woburn, Mass.) was hot early, opening the game for the Pride with back-to-back three pointers then working her way underneath for a pair of post layups to help Regis to a 14-7 first quarter lead. D'Angelo finished with 23 points on 8-12 shooting. Framingham would settle down, responding with a 12-2 run to take a 21-20 lead heading into the second quarter.

The Pride struggled offensively early in the second quarter as FSU extended the lead to 27-20 before a Stone jumper halted the Ram run. FSU remained hot from the floor with Veloza and Mulherin hitting back-to-back three pointers to put their team up 11 points with 6:16 left in the half.

In danger of the letting the game out of reach, Stone came alive on both ends of the court to keep the lead at 10 points. Regis would finish the quarter with a flurry when Maura Russell (Braintree, Mass.) and Kasey Britton-Doucette (New Boston, N.H.) hit consecutive three pointers in the last 32 seconds and went into the locker room trailing by only six points at 44-38.

The Pride took the momentum into the third period, feeding Stone early and often in the post to open the quarter on an 11-2 run capped by a Russell corner three. The rest of the period featured end-to-end action with Mulherin remaining hot from beyond the arc, helping her team to a 67-63 lead after three quarters.

The intensity picked up in the final 10 minutes with FSU clinging to a slim lead with just over five minutes remaining. Regis finally went back up when D'Angelo converted on a three point play to put her team up 73-72 with 4:50 to play. Down the stretch, both teams traded baskets but it was Stone's final layup that gave the Pride the win.

The Pride will enjoy a two-week break before retaking the court at Southern Maine on Saturday Dec. 30. Next up for FSU is a trip to Daytona Beach for a pair of games against York (Pa.) and Western New England, Dec. 28 and 29.
