WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team completed its sixth consecutive perfect New England Collegiate Conference regular season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Southern Vermont by a score of 81-30 at Higgins Court.
With the win, the Pride improves to 19-6 overall (18-0 NECC), while the Mountaineers see their season come to a close at 1-23 (1-17 NECC).
Before the game, the Pride honored its two seniors, guard Mikayla Murphy (Attleboro, Mass.) and forward Amanda Hawkesworth (Abington, Mass.) in a special Senior Day ceremony. The Pride's NCAA record conference winning streak, which now stands at 112 after Saturday's win, was also recognized. The Pride broke the record last season, but became the first team to ever win 100 straight conference games when it defeated Becker on Jan. 12.
Regis got out to a blazing start to open the game, as the team led 27-4 after one quarter. The Pride scored the game's first 14 points until Mountaineer freshman guard Taylor Mallett (Berwick, Maine) scored on a lay in 5:23 into the first quarter. The Pride continued to control the play in the second quarter, and led 42-12 at the half.
The Pride opened the second half with another run, scoring eight unanswered points, six of which from junior Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.), to jump out to a 52-12 lead in the early stages of the second half. By the end of the quarter, the Pride's lead was 66-22.
The Pride closed out the fourth quarter just as they had done in the second quarter, outscoring Southern Vermont 15-8 to secure the win.
Stone finished the game as the highest scorer, putting home 16 points in 18 minutes of action. Hawkesworth had a strong Senior Day as well, putting home 13 points of her own, while Murphy's Senior Day performance saw her finish with a game-high eight assists. For the second time this season, the Pride was perfect from the free-throw line on the afternoon, converting all 16 attempts.
For the Mountaineers, freshman Sarah Poirier (Ferrisburgh, Vt.) was the leading scorer, knocking down 11 points and going 3-for-5 from distance.
