Pride Continues Historic Run, Drops Mitchell In NECC Opener

 

NEW LONDON, Conn.Brittany Stone (West Bridgewater, Mass.) finished with a season-high 26 points to go along with 10 rebounds and the Regis (Mass.) women's basketball team opened New England Collegiate Conference play and extended its NCAA record consecutive league wins to 95 with a 75-54 win over Mitchell College Tuesday at the Yarnall Athletic Center.

Stone's second double double of the young season was aided by an 11-16 shooting performance to help the Pride to a 2-1 overall and 1-0 NECC record. Regis shot 47 percent for the game and had 12 players contribute in the scoring column. Brandi Bonneau (Derry, N.H.) chipped in with eight points while Mikayla Murphy (Attleboro, Mass.) contributed six points and six assists.

Camille Staggers paced the Mariners (0-4 overall, 0-1 NECC) with 12 points on 6-for-11 shooting and grabbed a team-high seven rebounds. Jessica Shepherd also finished in double digits with 10 points and was 3-for-4 from beyond the arc.

Regis scored the first 15 points of the contest to immediately seize control. Stone supplied the final eight points of the stretch before Mitchell got on the scoreboard on a three-pointer by Suzanne Vachon with 4:22 to go in the quarter.

The Pride's lead grew in the second stanza as Stone continued to be a presence in the paint on both ends. She had 16 points and recorded all three swats by the break, which saw Regis on top by a 38-17 margin.

Mitchell played a better second half but failed to make up any ground as each team put up 37 points in the final 20 minutes. Staggers scored eight of her 12 points after intermission to help the Mariners' cause.

Mitchell will next play at Bay Path University on Thursday, Dec. 1 at 8 p.m. Regis returns to action at home against Wheelock College on Thursday at 6 p.m.
