WESTON, Mass.- The Regis College women's basketball team continued its streak of 15 straight New England Collegiate Conference victories with a 69-43 decision over Bay Path College Tuesday night. The win puts the Pride at 18-4 overall on the season, while the visiting Wildcats drop to 4-14.
The first period opened with a jumper from Kayla Skiffington (East Longmeadow, Mass.) to put the Wildcats up by two points. Both teams would go shot for shot in a back and forth transition game that lasted for the next five minutes of play. The Pride gained the upper hand when Claire Ramonas (Portland, Maine.) intercepted a Toni Alexander (Enfield, Conn.) pass and pushed the ball up court to Emilee Marro (Bedford, N.H.) who converted on an uncontested layup. Ramonas's strong play propelled Regis to go up by as many as 15 in the next seven minutes.
Skiffington put an end to this scoring run by stealing the ball from the Pride's Janaya Bradley (New Haven, Conn.) and finished the play with a layup to cut the lead to 13. This would be the last time Bay Path would get close to Regis's lead as the Pride continued to push the ball in an up-tempo fashion. Late tallies by Teresa Busiek (Arlington, Mass.) and Marro put the Pride up 37-21 at halftime.
Marro opened the second half of play with a steal when she forced Riley to turn the ball over in the backcourt. Regis used this momentum to open the game up by scoring 15 points off turnovers in the second half. Sabree Rodriguez (Brockton, Mass.) and Ramonas continued to hit shots in the paint during the next ten minutes of play. Rodriguez ended the game by notching a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. Ramonas finished with 12 points, five assists, and five steals. Leah Murphy (Westborough, Mass.) captured a game high of 14 points, by hitting deep three-point shots throughout the game.
The Wildcats were led by Skiffington who was the main threat on offense. She tallied a game high in points with 19 and forced five turnovers to record five steals. Riley chipped in for Bay Path by crashing the boards eight times and scored eight points in the game. Toni Alexander was the main distributor for the Wildcats as she dished the ball six times to lead the teams in assists.
Regis returns to action Thursday, when the Pride travels to Brighton, Massachusetts to take on NECC opponent Newbury College 5:30 p.m. Bay Paths next matchup is Thursday night against NECC opponent Southern Vermont College at 6:00 p.m.
