Softball Falls in GNAC Doubleheader

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College lost both ends of a Great Northeast Athletic Conference softball doubleheader to Johnson & Wales, 11-2 and 11-1, Thursday afternoon at the Regis Softball Field.

Game One – Johnson & Wales 11, Regis 2

Johnson & Wales scored first as Ally Mishol hit a solo home run over the fence down the left field line in the first inning. The Wildcats scored six runs in the second inning, beginning with a two-run double by Kristin Frost and culminating when Megan Antaya raced home as she took advantage of a defensive miscommunication after a Meghan Gavin walk.

Mishol sent a single into left field in the third inning, scoring Brenna DuPerry and Antaya to increase the Wildcat lead to 10-0. After Johnson & Wales scored one run in the top of the fourth, Regis finally broke through with two outs in the bottom of the inning, starting with a single by Brianna Napoleone (Medford, Mass.) and continuing with a walk drawn by Sarah Fawcett (Londonderry, N.H.).

Erin Murphy (Bedford, N.H.) laced a double to center field to drive in Napoleone, and then Fawcett was able to score when Morgan LeBaron (Rehoboth, Mass.) reached on a Wildcat error. Neither team mounted any offense in the fifth inning, ending the game on the run rule.

Frost started as the pitcher for the Wildcats, allowing just one hit in the first three innings to pick up the victory. Madi McLellan (Fremont, N.H.) took the loss for the Pride, giving up five hits, two walks, and seven runs in 1 1/3 innings of work before Alyssa Rossillo (Sudbury, Mass.) came on in relief for the rest of the contest.

Game Two – Johnson & Wales 11, Regis 1

Johnson & Wales (15-15, 7-3 GNAC) earned five first-inning runs, starting with a two-run home run by Wildcat starting pitcher Summer Ramundo. With the bases loaded, Shari Minalga battled with Regis starter Nicole Tebo (Kingston, N.H.) for 17 pitches before finally drawing a walk to force in a run, followed by two more runs forced in on a hit batter and another walk.

In the second inning, Mishol led off with a triple to right field and scored on a Regis error. The Wildcats continued to build on their advantage with three runs in the third inning, featuring a two-run single by Gavin and an RBI groundout by Ramundo.

The Pride struck back in the bottom of the third inning as Allie Petillo (West Sayville, N.Y.) led off with a single and Kelsey Grimard (Pelham, N.H.) followed with a shot that hit the left field fence for a double. Fawcett hit a line drive that fell in front of the right fielder to drive in Petillo.

The Wildcats closed out the scoring in the fourth inning on RBI singles by Minalga and Gavin. After Ramundo allowed just three hits, two walks, and one run through the first three innings, Saxon Bresnahan pitched the final two innings for the visitors, giving up just one hit while striking out two batters.
