Pride Softball Loses Both Ends of Non-Conference Twinbill

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College lost both games of a non-conference collegiate softball doubleheader to Gordon College, 7-2 and 12-2, Tuesday afternoon at Regis Softball Field.

GORDON 7, REGIS 2

Gordon took the early lead in the first game as Karissa Hatchell led off with a double and eventually scored on a triple by Megan Jenkerson. Jenkerson would come in to score on a sacrifice fly to right field by Kristen Brown, increasing the Scot lead to 2-0.

In the third inning, Jenkerson earned another triple and scored on a double by Brown. The Pride would strike back in the bottom of the inning as Allie Petillo (West Sayville, N.Y.) singled and Kelsey Grimard (Pelham, N.H.) doubled, her 100th career hit, to put runners on second and third base. Ellery Rasmussen (Kingston, N.H.) followed with a single that drove in Petillo, and Grimard would score on a Gordon throwing error to cut the Regis deficit to 3-2.

The Scots loaded the bases with two outs in the fourth inning and scored one run on a wild pitch. Gordon put three runners on base again in the fifth inning, with Hatchell driving in two runs on a single down the right field line. In the sixth inning, Jenkerson led off with a double and scored on a single by Brown.

After allowing the Rasmussen single in the third inning, Caitlin Catalanotto retired the final 14 Regis batters in order to close out her complete game victory. She gave up just four hits, one walk, and one earned run while striking out 10 batters.

Nicole Tebo (Kingston, N.H.) took the loss for the Pride, allowing 12 hits, four walks, and seven runs in five innings while striking out four batters. Alyssa Ward (Webster, Mass.) came on in relief in the sixth inning and retired six of the seven batters she faced.

GORDON 12, REGIS 2

Gordon again took the lead in the first inning, as Hatchell led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on a double by Jenkerson. Jenkerson would advance to third on a single by Brown and score on a sacrifice fly to center field by Laura Bieren, increasing the Scot advantage to 2-0.

Regis answered in the bottom of the first as Petillo led off with a single, advanced to second on a Rasmussen walk, reached third on a wild pitch, and scored on an RBI groundout by Sarah Fawcett (Londonderry, N.H.). Gordon took advantage of two Pride errors in the second inning, as Jenkerson drove in Hatchell with a single to center field to extend the Scot lead back to two at 3-1.

The Scots broke the game open with three runs in the fourth inning, including Jenkerson's third triple of the day that drove in Rose Shannon. Regis put together a scoring threat in the bottom of the inning as Ward and Erin Murphy (Bedford, N.H.) started the frame with consecutive singles, but two strikeouts and a groundout ended the threat without any runs scoring.

Gordon scored two more runs in the fifth inning, but Regis responded in the bottom of the inning as Grimard walked, Rasmussen singled, and Fawcett doubled to center field to score Grimard. A bloop single by Ward loaded the bases with one out, but a flyout and a strikeout ended any further scoring chance for the Pride.

The Scots scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning, featuring a two-run double by Lily Rivera, and then Gordon starter Jasmine Mullally retired the Pride in order in the bottom of the sixth on two strikeouts and a popout to end the game on the run rule. Mullally gave up seven hits, two walks, and two runs in six innings, striking out a total of seven Regis batters as she threw 94 total pitches, 60 of them for strikes.

Madi McLellan (Fremont, N.H.) started for the Pride and allowed eight hits and six runs, only three of them earned, in 3 2/3 innings of work. Ward once again came on in relief and gave up seven hits and six runs in 2 1/3 innings in the circle.

Gordon (15-15) returns to conference play Wednesday, April 17, hosting University of New England in a doubleheader starting at 2:30 p.m.

Regis (4-22) also heads back into conference action, facing Emmanuel College in a GNAC doubleheader Wednesday, April 17, beginning at 5 p.m. These games were originally scheduled for this past Saturday but were postponed due to wet field conditions.
