Softball Suffers Doubleheader Sweep At Saint Joseph's (Me.)

STANDISH, Maine - A day after winning a pair of games over Anna Maria, the Regis (Mass.) softball team suffered a twinbill sweep at Saint Joseph's (Me.) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Sunday at Richard W. Bailey Field. In run-ruling the Pride, the Monks won 8-0 in game one and 13-2 in the back end of the doubleheader.

Game one saw the Pride (7-17, 3-13 GNAC)  muster only two hits to Kristal Smith (Pittston, Maine) who went the distance in posting the five-inning shutout. Allie Petillo (West Sayville, N.Y.) was tagged with the loss in one third of an inning of work. Alyssa Rossillo (Sudbury, Mass.) pitched long relief and stemmed the Monk tide, allowing two earned runs in four and one-third innings of work.

Smith helped her cause with two hits and two runs with an RBI and Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine), who led off the home half of the first inning with a solo homerun, added two hits, one run and two RBI. St. Joe's led 6-0 heading into the bottom half of the fifth before a two-run double from Grace Chadbourne (Jaffrey, N.H.) sealed the win.

The Monks (14-14, 10-6) put 10 fourth-inning runs on the board to highlight game two. Rossillo earned the start and pitched two scoreless innings while the Pride scored a run each in the second and third innings. Susan Coye (Melrose, Mass.) scored on a fielder's choice in the second with Brianna Napoleone (Medford, Mass.) driving home a run in the third.

The wheels would begin to fall off in the bottom of the third however as Melodie Bailey drove home the Monks' first run then Kaylee Burns delivered a solo homer to give St. Joe's a 3-2 lead through three innings.

Pomerleau's two-run homer highlighted the huge fourth inning for the Monks who put the game away.

The Pride returns home for a Wednesday, Apr. 25 GNAC doubleheader against Norwich.
