Softball Suffers Doubleheader Sweep To Mount Ida

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis (Mass.) softball team went in search of its first league win but was unable to find it, falling 5-2 and 2-1 in a doubleheader sweep to Mount Ida, Saturday in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Regis Field.

Game one saw Madi McLellan (4-11) (Fremont, N.H.) get tagged with the loss for the Pride (4-14, 0-10 GNAC), tossing a complete game striking out eight and giving up just two earned runs. Carrigan Costello (4-7) (Wolcott, Conn.) earned the win, allowing two runs on six Regis hits in seven complete innings.

Haley Microulis (Pawtucket, R.I.) had two hits, two runs and two RBI to lead the Mustangs (11-14, 6-6 GNAC) who were aided by three Regis errors. Microulis got Mount Ida on the board first with a run scoring double in the second inning then tripled in the fifth inning to put the Mustangs up 5-2 after their half of the fifth inning.

The two-run fifth by Mount Ida came after the Pride worked itself back into the game two innings earlier. Regis put a pair runs on the board in the third when Ellery Rasmussen's (Kingston, N.H.) two-run double drove home Kelsey Grimard (Pelham, N.H.) and Kayla Pieta (Middletown, Conn.) to cut the lead to 3-2.

Rasmussen would finish the game with a two-run, two-RBI performance. Pieta added a hit and a run scored for the Pride with Caitlin Hogan (Derry, N.H.) adding one hit, two runs and one RBI for Mount Ida.

Game two again saw Mount Ida strike first when Hogan scored after doubling to right centerfield to put the Mustangs up 1-0 after one-half an inning. The Pride would respond in the second inning on Emma Kelly's (Lynnfield, Mass.) two-out run scoring single to tie up the game.

Both pitchers would settle in until Shelby Nolan's (Ansonia, Conn.) RBI hit drove home Hogan from second to put the Mustangs up 2-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning.

Regis threatened in the bottom of the seventh when a pair of back-to-back two-out hits from Michaela Marum (Somerset, Mass.) and Grimard put the Pride in business. The threat ended though when Allie Petillo (West Sayville, N.Y.) grounded out to second and the Mustangs walked away with the doubleheader sweep.

McLellan was tagged with her second loss of the afternoon in a solid effort in the circle, allowing two runs on six hits with six strikeouts. Madeleine Smith (5-6) (San Diego, Calif.) gave up one run on four hits to earn the win.

The Pride will look to rebound Sunday with a doubleheader at Emmanuel. Mount Ida retakes the field Tuesday, Apr. 17 with a non-conference visit to Wentworth.
