Softball Falls to King's for First Loss of 2018

LITTLE RIVER, S.C. - King's College scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to defeat the Regis (Mass.) softball team 10-2 in six innings Monday morning at the North Myrtle Beach Sports Complex.

With the win, the Lady Monarchs improve to 1-2 on the season, while the Pride falls to 1-1.

King's led the Pride 3-0 after two innings, but Regis would get on the board in the top of the third. After junior Kelsey Grimard (Pelham, N.H.) and freshman Kayla Pieta (Middletown, Conn.) had back-to-back singles to open the inning, junior Brianna Napoleone (Medford, Mass.) blooped one to right that couldn't be handled by the Lady Monarch rightfielder, allowing Grimard to come home and cut the deficit to 3-1. King's, however, would get the run back in the bottom of the third to run the score to 4-1.

Sophomore Ellery Rasmussen (Kingston, N.H.) picked up her third run batted in in just two games in the top of the fifth inning. With two away and Pieta standing on second base, Rasmussen roped a single into centerfield, bringing home Pieta to cut the deficit to 4-2.

The King's offense took over in the sixth, scoring six runs on five hits. The biggest blows in the inning were a two-run double from freshman Gabby Leary (Colcott, Conn.) and an RBI triple from freshman Gabriella Medina (New Egypt, N.J.).

Senior Samantha Bloom (Scranton, Pa.) picked up her first win of the season in the circle, going the distance against the Pride and allowing just one earned run over six innings of work. Sophomore Madi McLellan (Fremont, N.H.) was credited with the loss, throwing four innings and allowing just one earned run. Freshman Alyssa Rossillo (Sudbury, Mass.) made her first collegiate appearance in relief of McLellan, pitching an inning and a third.

Grimard and Pieta were both 2-for-3 with a run scored from the top two spots in the batting order to lead the Pride offensively. Junior Allie Petillo (West Sayville, N.Y.) also had a strong game at the plate with two hits of her own.

Next up for the Pride, they'll take on Wilkes and Penn College on Tuesday afternoon in South Carolina. First pitches are slated for 1:30 p.m. and 3:30 p.m., respectively.
