WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College softball team used a pair of big innings in both ends of a doubleheader to sweep Daniel Webster 11-0, 21-3 in New England Collegiate Conference action on Senior Day, Sunday at Regis Field. The Pride improve to 12-8 overall and 8-4 in conference with the mercy rule wins while the Eagles drop to 2-18 and 0-14 in league play.
Seniors Marissa Mangarian (Goffstown, N.H.), Kirbie Garvey (Littleton, Mass.), Michaela Nejaime (Sandisfield, Mass.), Katie Cuozzo (Lynn, Mass.) and Alyssa McKinnon (Rowley, Mass.) played their final home games for the Pride and were honored with a special ceremony prior to the doubleheader.
Cuozzo (9-2) and Abigail Goslin (1-4) were the pitchers of record for both games.
Game 1
After a scoreless first inning, the Pride jumped all over Daniel Webster with 10 second inning runs. Goslin (Wrentham, Mass.) had trouble finding the strike zone with six bases on balls in the inning. Amanda Navarro's (Stoneham, Mass.) two-run double was the big hit of the inning, scoring McKinnon and Allison Caloggero (Medford, Mass.) to put Regis up 8-0.
Cuozzo worked just three innings allowing no runs on just one hit. Mangarian tossed the final two innings and was equally as dominant also with a scoreless outing. Goslin went the distance for the Eagles.
Navarro finished with two hits, two runs and two RBI and Michaela Nejaime added one hit, one run and three RBI.
Game 2
Game two saw the Pride equal their biggest offensive output of the season. The 21 runs were the most since a 21-8 win vs. Summit (Pa.) on opening day.
Kelsey Grimard (Pelham, N.H.) got the start in right field and delivered a monster performance , batting 3-3 with four runs and two RBI. Caloggero had two hits, two runs and two RBI with Jenna Casello (Westborough, Mass.) adding two hits, three runs and one RBI.
The Pride did their damage in the first and fourth innings. Caloggero and Michaela Nejaime both delivered run-scoring doubles as part of Regis' 12-run first inning. The Pride capitalized on three DWC errors in the fourth to tack on nine more runs and win going away.
Daniel Webster got its first runs of the afternoon when Julia Bodoni (Tewksbury, Mass.) had an RBI single then later came home on a double steal.
The Pride return to the field on Monday against Wheelock. The doubleheader, set to start at 12:00 p.m., will be played at Regis Field with Wheelock designated as the home team.
