WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College softball team picked up a doubleheader sweep of Daniel Webster College, 14-0 and 13-0, both in five innings on Sunday afternoon in Weston, Mass. The Pride improve to 7-16 overall and 7-9 in the New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) with the wins, while the Eagles fall to 0-8 overall and 0-6 in league play.
The Pride got things started early, jumping out to a quick 7-0 lead by the end of the first inning in game one. Sam Bliss (Framingham, Mass.) singled to right field, allowing Jenna Casello (Westborough, Mass.) to score the first run of the day. Shortly after, Michaela NeJaime (Sandisfield, Mass.) picked up a pair of RBI after singling to right center.
Rachel DesRochers (Westford, Mass.) and Kirbie Garvey (Littleton, Mass.) followed that up with back-to-back singles, allowing Allison Caloggero (Medford, Mass.) and NeJaime to score runs. DesRochers and Garvey would go on to score a run each after Kelsey Morton (South Portland, Maine) and Bliss both singled in their at-bats.
Sara Pelkey (Fitzwilliam, N.H.) opened up the second inning with a deep double to center field, but Regis responded by getting three quick outs to set themselves up to bat again. The Pride added on to their lead with five runs in the bottom of the second after Caloggero, DesRochers, Casello, and Rachel Tortora (Malden, Mass.) each scored their second runs of the day, while Morton scored for the first time when Katie Cuozzo (Lynn, Mass.) singled to right field.
After a scoreless 1 ½ innings, Regis sealed the Eagles' fate when Angelica Arredondo (Merrimac, Mass.) and Kelsey Heath (Lowell, Mass.) scored the 13th and 14th runs in the bottom of the fourth.
Game two was much of the same story, as Regis jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning. With Casello on second base, Heath singled up the middle, which allowed Casello to tag home for the 1-0 lead. Tortora hit a bomb into center field for a triple shortly after, which gave Cuozzo enough time to make the score 2-0. Tortora then scored her own run after a Caloggero single up the middle for a three run advantage.
The Pride offense really started to break through in the bottom of the third, as eight different players accounted for nine runs throughout the inning. Cuozzo was the lone player to score twice during that stretch. Regis closed out the game with the final run in the bottom of the fourth. After a passed ball sent Garvey to second base, Bliss stepped up to the plate and hit a long one into center field, allowing Garvey to score for the eventual 13-0 final.
Pelkey led DWC with three hits over the double-header, while Ashley England (Old Town, Maine) and Alexis Pevelock (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) also had a hit apiece in the losing effort for the Eagles.
Cuozzo picked up a pair of wins on the mound to improve to 5-8 on the season. She allowed just two hits and struck out ten batters through 6.0 innings pitched over the span of both games. Pelkey fell to 0-4 on the year after giving up eight earned runs (11 total) and striking out one through 1.1 innings pitched in game one. Mollie Bartles (Torrington, Conn.) was dealt the loss in game two after pitching 3.0 innings and giving up 12 runs (10 earned).
Both Daniel Webster and Regis return to action on Tuesday with double-headers. The Pride welcome Lasell College on Tuesday for a pair of non-league games slated for 5 and 7 p.m., while the Eagles travel to take on NECC foe Elms at 3 and 5 p.m.
