PRIDE FALL TO ELMS IN DOUBLEHEADER

CHICOPEE, Mass. – Regis College dropped a New England Collegiate Conference doubleheader on the road at Elms College on Thursday afternoon in Chicopee, Mass. The Pride (4-15, 4-8 NECC) dropped the first game 8-0 in six innings to the Blazers (5-9, 3-3 NECC) before falling in the nightcap 6-3.

In the opening game, Elms plated four runs in the bottom of the first and two in the bottom of the third to take a 6-0 lead. In the bottom of the sixth, junior pinch-hitter Rachel Beery (Springfield, Mass.) cracked a one-out double, advanced to third on a passed ball and then scored when senior third baseman Caitlee Carrier (Charlestown, Mass.) ripped an RBI single to center. Junior catcher Gianna Gonyea (East Longmeadow, Mass.) then connected for a run-scoring single to left field sending junior shortstop Gina DiGiovanni (Springfield, Mass.) home with the winning run to seal the 8-0, mercy-rule victory.

Carrier, Gonyea, Beth Grimes (Terryville, Conn.) and senior first baseman Ally Witaszek (Feeding Hills, Mass.) each had two hits in the game, while Grimes drove in three and Carrier notched two RBI. Grimes (3-3) struck out eight batters in six innings of work in the circle and scattered just four hits.

Regis was led by Jenna Casello (Westborough, Mass.) who was 3 for 3 at the plate and added two stolen bases. Katie Cuozzo (Lynn, Mass.) fanned four batters in 4.0 innings of work in the circle and suffered the loss.

In game two, Elms held a 2-1 lead after the first inning of play before Regis took the lead in the top of the third on an RBI single by Alyssa McKinnon (Raynham, Mass.) and a run-scoring double by Allison Caloggero (Medford, Mass.) to make it 3-2. Elms answered in the home half of the third frame when senior second baseman Abby Capone (Fitchburg, Mass.) delivered a two-run single to left field to set the score at 4-3. Grimes later extended the lead to three runs when she laced a two-out, two-run single to left give Elms a 6-3 victory.

Jessica Colson (Agawam, Mass.) was stellar through six innings of work in the circle striking out seven hitters to improve to 2-5 overall. Grimes pitched the final inning and earned the save. Carrier was 4 for 4 with two runs scored, while Grimes was 3 for 4 with two RBI.

Cuozzo suffered the game two loss striking out five Blazers in the process. McKinnon was 3 for 3 at the dish, while Caloggero and Rachel DesRochers (Westford, Mass.) added two hits each in the losing effort for the Pride.

Regis is back in action on Saturday as the Pride host Bay Path College in an NECC doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
