Pride Men’s Volleyball Cruises Past Bard

ANNANDALE-ON-HUDSON, N.Y. – The two-week break between matches did not seem to affect the Regis College men's volleyball team, as the Pride earned their second consecutive road sweep, defeating Bard College, 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-18), Tuesday night in a non-conference match at the Stevenson Athletic Center.

Kostea Andreenko (Marstons Mills, Mass.) was a perfect 7-for-7 in attack attempts, plus he earned five blocks in two sets of action. Inelson Alves (Brockton, Mass.) and Fernando Gomez (San Juan, Puerto Rico) finished with six kills apiece as the Pride enjoyed its second-highest single-match team hitting percentage in program history at .549, collecting 34 kills on 51 attack attempts with just six attack errors.

Regis took a 6-2 lead in the opening set after a service ace by Matt Ferrara (Haverhill, Mass.), and then the two teams split the next eight points. The Pride ran away from the Raptors thanks to a 15-4 scoring run that closed out the first set, capped by three straight kills from Alves.

The Pride scored the first eight points of the second set, including two service aces by Nathan Asstafan (Woonsocket, R.I.), and then they would extend their lead to 12 at 17-5 after consecutive kills by Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Gomez. The Raptors scored four straight points, capped by a service ace from Price Ohmer, but Regis finished off the second set with an 8-3 scoring run, punctuated by kills from Alves and Beimel.

Bard (2-12) took a 4-2 lead early in the third set, led by two kills from Tristan Kozul, but a kill by Dimitri Stewart (Paterson, N.J.) and a service ace by Gueincy Clodomir (Pembroke Park, Fla.) helped Regis pull ahead, 8-5. The Raptors tied the set four different times, but the Pride took the lead for good on kills by Clodomir and Shawn Gamble (Cranston, R.I.) as well as a service ace by Alexander Bui (Quincy, Mass.). Gamble and Clodomir would combine on blocks for the Pride's final two points of the set, clinching the match.

All three Regis setters played one set apiece, starting with Brendan Lam (Rockville, Md.), who finished with 10 assists and two service aces. Sebastian Valdes (Diamond Bar, Calif.) collected 11 assists, one kill, one service ace, and one block in the second set, and Jayson Vega (Ponce, Puerto Rico) closed out the match with eight assists in the third set.

Kozul led the Raptors with eight kills, while Nic Smith accumulated 12 assists and two service aces during the evening.

Regis (7-7) returns to Higgins Court and to Great Northeast Athletic Conference play this weekend, hosting a tri-match Saturday, March 16. The Pride will face Lasell at 10 a.m. and Emmanuel at 2 p.m., with the Lasers and the Saints playing each other at 12 noon.
