Andreenko Named GNAC Men’s Volleyball Defensive Player of Week

WINTHROP, Mass. – After leading the Regis College men's volleyball team defensively at the net last week, sophomore Kostea Andreenko (Marstons Mills, Mass.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

Andreenko led Regis in conference matches at Rivier and at Emerson, averaging 1.86 kills, 0.29 service aces, and 1.29 blocks per set. Against the Raiders, he collected three block assists to go along with four kills. Two nights later against the Lions, he finished with six total blocks to accompany nine kills and two service aces. It was his fourth match with five or more blocks so far this season.

One of nine newcomers to the Pride volleyball program this season, Andreenko has made an immediate impact, leading the team with 27 total blocks as well as currently sitting third on the squad with 60 kills and 12 service aces. He collected 10 kills against Eastern Nazarene Jan. 24 and against Newbury Feb. 13, plus he accumulated nine service aces against Colby-Sawyer Feb. 9.

This is the first career weekly award for Andreenko and the first one for a Regis player in five weekly reports so far this season. The Pride last earned a GNAC weekly award on April 2, 2018, when Inelson Alves (Brockton, Mass.) was named Rookie of the Week after averaging 2.36 kills and 0.36 blocks per set in four matches during the previous week.

Regis (5-7, 0-3 GNAC) heads to New London, N.H., to face Colby-Sawyer in a conference match Wednesday, Feb. 27, starting at 7 p.m. The Pride will not play another contest for two weeks, traveling to Bard March 12 before finally returning home for a GNAC tri-match involving Lasell and Emmanuel Saturday, March 16, at Higgins Court.
