Men’s Volleyball Too Much For Mount Ida

WESTON, Mass.Brett Krahl (Santa Clarita, Calif.) delivered a team-high nine kills, Jayson Vega (Ponce, Puerto Rico) handed out 20 assists and the Regis (Mass.) men's volleyball team dominated from start to finish in a 25-10, 25-20, 25-20 sweep over Mount Ida in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Tuesday night at Higgins Court.

Brett Southworth (Orange, Conn.) was the high hitter for the Mustangs (12-18, 0-11 GNAC), posting a match-high 12 kills while setter Kevin Keohane's (Jefferson, N.J.) 26 assists were also a match best.

The opening set set the stage for the Pride sweep. An early six-point run capped by Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Wade Robidoux (Granby, Mass.) both getting in on a block to give their team an 11-2 lead. Tyler Shinkle (West Deptford, N.J.) sandwiched a pair of kills around a Vega error to stem the tide for the Mustangs, but the lead slowly swelled with the Pride finishing the set on a 7-1 run.

Sets two and three featured a closer scoreline but Regis (8-15, 3-9 GNAC) had the upperhand for nearly the duration. Vega's block extended an early lead to 7-3 forcing a Mount Ida timeout and later handed out an assist on a Jeff Ramos (Pawtucket, R.I.) kill to extend to a 13-7 lead. Mount Ida hung around after kills from Southworth and Keohane but the Pride never let the lead dip below three points.

Regis had trouble closing out the Mustangs in the third set. Robidoux's kill put his team up 15-12, but Mount Ida rallied with four straight points to take the lead. The Pride regrouped and ran off six straight points to help close the match.

Regis closes the regular season with senior day this Saturday, Apr. 7 hosting a GNAC trimatch against Emerson (11:00 a.m.) and Johnson & Wales (RI) (3:00 p.m.). The Mustangs host Lasell this Thursday, Apr. 5 at 6:00 p.m.
