Men's Volleyball Opens Trimatch With Sweep of Lasell

BOSTON - The Regis (Mass.) men's basketball team use a strong defensive effort, posting a season-high 17 blocks to win three tough sets in a 25-23, 25-22, 26-24 sweep of Lasell in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action Saturday at Emmanuel College.

Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) nearly posted a double double with nine digs and a match-high nine kills. Chris Fitta (Warwick, R.I.) recorded a team-high 13 digs with Jayson Vega (Ponce, Puerto Rico) adding five kills, 26 assists and six digs.

David Anthony put up eight kills and six digs for the Lasers who hit just .028 for the match. Lasell fell to 7-19 and 4-7 in league play.

The Pride (7-14, 2-8 GNAC) won the opening set despite hitting .077. After a Conor Leary-Wilson kill put Lasell up 10-8, the Pride ran off five straight points capped by a Beimel kill and led 13-10. The rest of the set featured runs by both teams, the last from Lasell who won four straight points to tie the score at 23-23, but a final kill from Beimel sealed the win.

Set two saw the Pride begin to distance itself midway through the set and hold on for the win. Kills by Jeff Ramos (Pawtucket, R.I.) and Inelson Alves (Brockton, Mass.) helped Regis to a 17-13 lead but the Lasers wouldn't go away, shaving the advantage to just one point at 23-22 off a Janci Soto kill. Ramos then ripped a kill and Alves and Wade Robidoux (Granby, Mass.) got in on a block to put the Pride up by two sets.

Regis had to grind out a third-set win to complete the sweep. The Pride trailed by three in the later stages of the set before Vega's service ace and kill helped even the score at 17-17. Back-to-back kills from Robidoux kept the Pride up by one point and down the stretch it was a pair of kills from Beimel and a final match-clincher from Robidoux.
