Men's Volleyball Dropped by Emmanuel

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) men's volleyball team got more than it could handle against Emmanuel College, as the Pride was swept by the Saints Tuesday evening in Great Northeast Athletic Conference action at Higgins Court. Set scores were 25-20, 25-19, 25-14.

With the win, the Saints improve to 11-13 overall and 5-4 in the GNAC, while the Pride drops to 6-13 overall, 1-7 in conference play.

The opening set started tight, but a big surge late in the set gave the Saints the early 1-0 lead. The Pride trailed by just a margin of 14-12 midway through the set, but a kill by junior Alex Silva (Jamaica Plain, Mass.) started the Saints on a 4-1 run from which the hosts could not recover. Regis couldn't generate much in the way of offense during the set, hitting just .074, with eight kills and six errors.

The second set was all Saints in the early going, as the visitors jumped ahead 11-4 early to force the Pride to take a timeout. Led by three kills from freshman Inelson Alves (Brockton, Mass.), the hosts would respond coming out of the timeout however, going on an 8-3 run to make it close at 14-12, but the Pride could get no closer. Emmanuel would control the play down the stretch to take a commanding 2-0 lead, thanks in part to eight kills from junior Erik English (Simi Valley, Calif.) in the second set alone.

The Pride again struggled in set number three, and the Saints capitalized to clinch the sweep. After English put down four kills in the first eight points of the set, the Saints led 6-2 and never looked back. Regis had 11 attack errors and just six kills in the set for an attack percentage of -.125.

English was far and away the match's leader in kills on the evening, recording 16 in the victory, while picking up a double-double with 10 digs. Alves led the Pride with nine kills on the night, followed by senior Jeff Ramos (Pawtucket, R.I.), who recorded four kills and eight digs in the losing effort.

Next up for the Pride, they will take on Johnson & Wales in GNAC action in Providence on Thursday night. The Saints will be off until Saturday when the host the Pride and Lasell in a GNAC trimatch at Andy Yosinoff Court.
