CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – The Regis (Mass.) men's volleyball team hit the court for its season opener but weren't able to start the 2018 campaign on a high note, falling in straight sets (25-15, 25-15, 25-13) at MIT Tuesday night at Rockwell Cage.
Jeff Ramos (Pawtucket, R.I.) led the Pride (0-1) with seven kills and shared match-high honors with 10 digs. Thomas Nelson (San Ramon, Calif.) also posted 10 digs on the other side of the net for MIT (3-0). Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) added six kills and accounted for three of his team's four blocks. As a team the Pride hit -.046.
Tavish Smith (Laguna Beach, Calif.) led the Engineer attack with 10 kills on 18 swings and no errors while Andrew Callahan (Western Springs, Ill.) added nine kills, seven digs and four blocks.
Set one saw MIT jump on the Pride early but kills from Ramos and Jayson Vega (Ponce, Puerto Rico) shaved the lead to 10-9. The Engineers would take control from there, winning 11 of the next 13 points and cruising to the win.
The Pride led early in the second set as block assists from Beimel and Brett Krahl (Santa Clarita, Calif.) gave their team a 7-5 lead. In similar fashion to the opening set, MIT went on a mid-set run to seize control. Callahan and Skyler Kaufman (Needham, Mass.) both posted kills and got in on a block as part of a 10-2 run. MIT closed out the match one set later, reeling off nine straight points late in the frame to complete the sweep.
Regis stays on the road to start the season, playing a pair of matches at SUNY Poly this Saturday, Jan. 27 at 12:00 p.m. MIT next hosts Eastern Nazarene on Friday, Feb. 2 at 7:00 p.m.
