Pride Makes Quick Work of Newbury

WESTON, Mass. - The Regis (Mass.) men's volleyball team needed just 50 minutes on Tuesday evening to sweep Newbury College 25-15, 25-14, 25-11 in New England Collegiate Conference action at Higgins Court. With the win, the Pride improves to 12-12 (7-1 NECC) on the season, while the Nighthawks fall to 6-13 (3-7 NECC).

The Pride got out to a quick start in the opening set on Tuesday and never looked back. A kill from senior Sean Bisnett (Oxnard, Calif.) capped a 10-2 match-opening run that put the visitors in an early hole from which they couldn't recover. The Nighthawks cut the deficit to seven at 13-6, but could get no closer, as the Pride cruised to a 25-15 first set victory. As a team, the Pride hit .577 in the opening set.

An 8-1 run midway through the second set was the difference as the Pride again cruised, this time to the tune of 25-14. Bisnett again served as the Pride's spark plug in the set, as the senior capped the run with his third consecutive kill to give the Pride a 15-5 advantage.

The third set got off to an even start until the hosts used a 5-0 run to pull away. With Regis trailing 7-6 in the early stages of the set, senior setter Joe Hanrahan (Coventry, R.I.) stepped to the service line and helped his team go ahead 11-7. A few points later, with the Pride now ahead 12-9, Regis scored nine consecutive points, thanks in part to back-to-back service aces from sophomore Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.), to take a decisive 21-9 lead. The 9-0 run all but put away the Nighthawks, as the Pride picked up their second consecutive win.

Bisnett led all players on the evening with 15 kills (six in each of the first two sets), while teammate Marcos Aguirre (Norwalk, Calif.) added 10. The Nighthawks' offense was paced by freshman Matt Sepe (Cranston, R.I.), who led his team with seven kills.

Next up for the Pride, they will host Eastern Nazarene in NECC action at Higgins Court on Saturday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. The Nighthawks will play next the same day, hosting Senior Day at 3:00 p.m. against Pine Manor in non-conference action.
