Men's Volleyball Dominates Newbury, Mount Ida In Tri-Match Action

NEWBURY, Mass. – The Regis (Mass.) men's volleyball team extended its winning streak to five matches, dominating Newbury (25-10, 25-16, 25-22) and Mount Ida (25-13, 25-18, 25-15) in tri-match action Saturday at Pappas Gymnasium on the Hellenic College campus.

The Pride improved to 9-7 and, with the win over Newbury, a perfect 4-0 in New England Collegiate Conference play. The host Nighthawks posed little opposition to the Pride who saw a great team effort lead to the win. Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) and Sean Bisnett (Oxnard, Calif.) drilled a team-high nine kills with Beimel adding a match-high eight digs. Brett Krahl (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and Marcos Aguirre (Norwalk, Calif.) each added eight kills.

Joshua Thorne (Oxford, Conn.) posted a match-high 13 kills for Newbury who slipped to 3-9 overall after also losing to Mount Ida and 2-3 in conference.

Regis hit .380 for the match, with the Nighthawks unable to handle the Pride's net presence hitting just .193. Regis used a 10-1 run to break away and win set one and pulled away late in the second frame to go up two sets. Aguirre had a pair of kills down the stretch to seal the set two win.

Regis completed the day with another sweep, this time versus Mount Ida. The Pride hit at a .438 clip led by Bisnett's match high 13 kills. Bisnett hit .550 for the match with Krahl hitting a match-best .692 (10-1-13).

Kevin Vanderhorst, Peter Griffenkranz (Deer Park, N.Y.) and Brett Southworth (Orange, Conn.) each had five kills to pace the Mustangs (10-8).

Regis dominated Mount Ida in sets one and three and used a 7-2 run midway through set three to pull away. Bisnett posted a pair kills in the spurt.

Regis now heads out west for the Cal Lu Fornia Invitational hosted by Cal Lutheran University. The Pride plays UC Merced and UC Santa Cruz Friday, Mar. 10 then closes the tournament the following day with matches against Benedictine Mesa and Cal Lutheran.
