Men's Volleyball Drops Heartbreaker To Daniel Webster In NECC Semifinal

BEVERLY, Mass. - Sean Bisnett (Oxnard, Calif.) delivered a double double with 14 kills and 14 digs but it came in a heartbreaking loss as the Regis College men's volleyball team fell in five sets to Daniel Webster on Friday night in the semifinals of the New England Collegiate Conference men's volleyball tournament at McDonald Gymnasium. Set scores were 22-25, 26-24, 13-25, 25-19, 15-12.

 

Regis closes the season at 12-12 while the Eagles (16-12) move on to play host Endicott College in the championship match. Endicott topped Elms in four sets in the other semifinal.

 

Marcos Aguirre (Norwalk, Calif.) had a match-high 16 kills for the Pride with Christopher Fitta (Warwick, R.I.) adding 13 digs. Tommy Reyes led the way for Daniel Webster with 13 kills and 16 digs and Nate Makaiwi posted a match-high 18 digs.

 

The Pride twice went up a set only to see DWC rally to even the match. In the deciding set, Regis went up early off Bisnett and Brett Krahl kills but the Eagles responded to take a 5-3 lead. Regis regained the advatange at 8-7 only to see Daniel Webster go back up and clinch a spot in the championship.

 

The opening set saw Regis rally late to take the early set lead. A Saunoa Afoa kill put the Eagles up 17-15 then an ace by Makaiwi extended to a 20-17 lead. The set belonged to the Pride from then on as Regis went on an 8-2 to run to steal the win.

 

The Pride squandered a chance to take a commanding 2-0 lead, but appeared to right the ship with a dominating 25-13 set three win. Brandon Tordoff (Coventry, R.I.) got in on a block then delivered a kill to put his team up 8-5. The block party continued with block assists from Krahl and Zach Sindoni (Haverhill, Mass.) to push the lead 14-7. Krahl, who had a match-high eight blocks, got two more to help finish off the Eagles in set three.

 

Daniel Webster would not go away, extending the match with a fourth-set win before capturing the win.

 

Drew Beimel (Redondo Beach, Calif.) added seven kills and 10 digs for the Pride.
