PRIDE EARN FIRST WIN OF YEAR IN TRI-MATCH

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Regis College men's volleyball team picked up its first win of the season as the Pride posted a 3-2 victory over Sarah Lawrence on Sunday afternoon on the campus of Albertus Magnus College on Sunday afternoon. The Pride posted set scores of 23-25, 25-7, 25-19, 16-25, 15-7 to grab win number one in 2012. The Pride suffered a 3-0 setback to host Albertus Magnus as a part of the tri-match and ended the weekend at 1-8 overall.

In the win over Sarah Lawrence, Regis had two players record double-doubles as Andrew Carroll (Natick, Mass.) posted 23 kills and 11 digs, Andrew Wilder (Brockton, Mass.) had 11 kills and 10 digs, while David Amicangioli (Arlington, Mass.) had a match-high 36 assists to go with three service aces and five digs. Si Pan Leong (Boston, Mass.) added 7 kills and 11 digs, while Wilder and Brandon Yarrell-Bacote (Bronx, N.Y.) combined for 10 service aces.

Regis a very close first set, 25-23, and then responded with a dominating second set, 25-7, and took a 2-1 lead in the match with a 25-19 win over Sarah Lawrence in set three. The Gryphons responded with a 25-16 win in the fourth set and forced a fifth and deciding game.

The Pride fell behind early at 3-5, but responded with a 7-2 run capped off by a Carroll kill to take a 10-7 lead and force a Gryphon timeout. Carroll then finished off the match with four kills to seal the first win of the season for Regis.

Against Albertus Magnus, Brendan Charamut (Southington, Conn.) led the Falcons with a flawless 12 kills in 18 attempts as he did not record a hitting error in the match. Charamut added two assists, three service aces and two total blocks as well. Carlos Torres (Adjuntas, Puerto Rico) added six service aces and five digs for the Falcons, while four of his service aces came in the first set alone.

The Falcons recorded 12 kills in 22 attempts in the first set led by four from freshman Glenn Johnson (Newington, Conn.). In that opening set, Regis tallied eight kills, their-best effort on the day.

Albertus dominated play in the final two sets as they held Regis to three kills in the second and just one in the third. The Falcons recorded 13 kills in the second set and registered just one hitting error in 23 tries.

Douglas DeSousa (Danbury, Conn.) led the way for Albertus in the final set as he recorded nine-consecutive service aces to push the Falcons out to a 22-5 lead. DeSousa finished the match with a season-best 10 service aces. The sophomore outside hitter added a team-best 11 digs along with seven kills on the afternoon.

The Falcons finished the match with 32 kills in 58 attempts, while hitting .466. They held Regis to a negative hitting percentage as the Pride recorded a total of 12 kills during the match.
