Men’s Track and Field Excels at Regis Spring Classic

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College men's track and field team enjoyed success as it hosted the 2019 Regis Spring Classic Friday at Regis Stadium.

Matthew Malone (West Roxbury, Mass.) qualified for the Division III New England Championships in the 110 meter high hurdles, posting a preliminary time of 15.95 seconds before finishing second in the finals in 16.26 seconds. He also finished seventh in the long jump with a top mark of 5.44 meters (17' 10.25").

Malone ran a strong second leg of the 4x400 meter relay, joining with Jovan Sematimba (Burlington, Mass.), Matt Sowden (Scituate, R.I.), and Christian Hendricks (Edgewater, Md.) to help the Pride finish fourth in the event with a total time of 3:56.97. Earlier in the meet, Hendricks finished third in the 800 meter run in 2:06.60, just ahead of Sematimba in fourth place in 2:07.24.

Nicholas Pastore (Norwood, Mass.) provided another strong performance in the sprint events, first qualifying for the finals of the 100 meter dash with a preliminary time of 11.72 seconds. In the final, he improved to a time of 11.59 seconds to end up in fourth place. Pastore also finished fourth among collegiate runners in the 200 meter dash with a time of 23.79 seconds.

Also on the track, Shane Romanchick (Trumbull, Conn.) finished fifth in the 1500 meter run with a time of 4:45.69.

In the throwing events, Daniel LaFlamme (Watertown, Conn.) led the way for the Pride, finishing second in the shot put with a new personal best outdoor mark of 13.14 meters (43' 1.5"), third in the hammer throw with a new personal best overall mark of 41.51 meters (136' 2") and sixth in the discus throw with a top toss of 32.75 meters (107' 5").

Cole Anderson (Falmouth, Maine) ended up right behind LaFlamme in the hammer throw, posting a mark of 38.87 meters (127' 6") to finish fourth. Mark Dumas (Woodstock, Conn.) also ended up just behind LaFlamme in an event, as he placed fourth in the shot put with a mark of 12.42 meters (40' 9") posted on his final throw of the night.

Dumas also finished 10th in the discus throw with a top effort of 28.60 meters (93' 10"), ahead of Alex Hlywa (Southbury, Conn.) in 14th place at 26.45 meters (86' 9"). Hlywa, ending the meet with a 10th place finish in the shot put at 11.19 meters (36' 8.5"), posted Regis' top mark in the javelin throw at 39.30 meters (128' 11") to finish seventh, just ahead of Angel Pagan-Rodriguez (Bayamon, Puerto Rico) in eighth place at 36.68 meters (120' 4") and Nathan Thacker (Halifax, Mass.) in ninth place at 35.66 meters (117' 0").

As a team, Regis finished in third place with 57 points, just behind second place Massachusetts Maritime with 71 points. Husson won nine of 18 events to cruise to the team title with 211 points.

Regis College heads north to Manchester, N.H., next Saturday, April 13, for the Penmen Relays, hosted by Southern New Hampshire University.
