Strong Performances For Track and Field At Regis Spring Classic

WESTON, Mass. – Kate Cowden (Wilmington, Mass.) placed first in the women's shot put and discus, and Matt Norton (Weymouth, Mass.) won the men's 800 meter to highlight a solid showing by the Regis (Mass.) track and field team, Friday afternoon at the 2017 Regis Spring Classic.

Cowden competed in the hammer throw as well, finishing sixth out of 13 participants. Her first throw of 11.08 meters in the shot put proved to be her best and her 35.73 meter toss on her second discus attempt was the top score and gave her top honors in two events.

The women's side also featured a first place 4x100 meter relay performance. Abbie Cooke (Abington, Mass.), Keegan Duguay (Watertown, Mass.), Cassandra Froio (Tewksbury, Mass.) and Bernice Boateng (Danielson, Conn.) ran the race in 53.13 seconds narrowly edging Salve Regina (53.18). Duguay showcased a strong showing in the 100 meter hurdles as well with a second place finish (16.76 seconds).

The Pride men also featured several notable performances, specifically Nortons 800-meter winning time of 2:00.87. Teammate Kyle Gillen-Hughes (Reading, Mass.) placed three spots behind him at 2:04.37. Jovan Sematimba (Burlington, Mass.) added a bronze finish in the 3,000 meter (9:59.37).

The men's field events saw Taylor Garner (Richmond, Vt.) place second in both the discus toss (34.73m) and hammer throw (34.65m) with Frank Pelleteri (Freeport, Maine) turning in a fourth place finish in the shot put with a 12.02 meter toss on his fifth attempt.

Both Pride teams are next in action Saturday, Apr. 15 when they visit Fitchburg State University for the Eric Loeschner Memorial Invitational.
