Track & Field Opens Outdoor Season at Bears Invitational

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - Three members of the Regis (Mass.) men's and women's track & field teams qualified for the Division III New England Championships in the first meet of the outdoor season Saturday afternoon at the Bears Invitational at Bridgewater State University.

Freshman ChiChi Akanegbu (North Easton, Mass.) and junior Kate Cowden (Wilmington, Mass.) both qualified for New Englands in the shot put with identical throws of 11.07 meters to tie for fourth in the event. Cowden also qualified for the New England Championships in the discus throw with a toss of 34.95 meters to finish eighth.

Sophomore Keegan Duguay (Watertown, Mass.) was the Pride's third New England qualifier on the day. Duguay finished third overall in the 100m hurdles with a time of 16.39 to punch her ticket to the championships.

Rookie Bernice Boateng (Danielson, Conn.) impressed in her first collegiate outdoor meet, as the freshman placed second overall in the 100m dash. Boateng completed the race with a time of 13.02. Fellow freshman Maddie Boucias (Buckland, Mass.) ran a time of 5:12 in the 1500m run, winning her heat of the race.

On the men's side, senior Matt Norton (Weymouth, Mass.) ran a time of 4:29.33 in the 1500 meter run. Following four seconds behind were freshman Jovan Sematimba (Burlington, Mass.) and sophomore Kyle Gillen-Hughes (North Reading, Mass.). Norton also won his heat of the 800 meter run with a time of 2:06, finishing the event in eighth place overall.
Both teams will return to action next weekend at the Snowflake Classic at Tufts University on Saturday morning.
