Pride Men’s Tennis Prevails for First GNAC Win of Season

WESTON, Mass. – Two doubles sets went to a tiebreaker and three singles matches went past the minimum two sets, but Regis College was able to pull out enough of those contests to defeat Colby-Sawyer College, 5-4, Saturday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's tennis dual match at the Regis Tennis Center.

The Pride won all three doubles contests, but needed extra points in two of them. At number two doubles, Owen Pelissier (Hingham, Mass.) and Sebastian Torres (San Juan, Puerto Rico) earned an 8-3 victory.

The other two doubles matches were tied at 7-7, forcing a tiebreaker. First to win their tiebreaker was the number one doubles duo of Nolan Bebarta (Danville, Calif.) and Johnny Pallotta (Bay Shore, N.Y.), followed by a victory by the number three doubles team of Cam Charbonneau (Guilford, Conn.) and Matt DaRosso (Yonkers, N.Y.).

Evan Russell (East Wareham, Mass.) cruised to a straight-set victory at number six singles (6-1, 6-1) to increase the Regis advantage to 4-0. Needing just one point to clinch the overall match, the Pride were forced to battle for that point, as Colby-Sawyer won straight-set matches at number one singles and number three singles.

At number two singles, Torres won the first set, 6-3, but fell in the next two sets by the same score as the Chargers' Mike White brought his team within one points at 4-3. However, in a hard-fought contest at number five singles, Mitchell Weiner (Plano, Texas) rallied from a first set defeat, winning the next two sets to defeat his opponent and clinch the match for the Pride.

Charbonneau, celebrating Senior Day as his collegiate career winds down, won the first set at number four singles in a tiebreaker, but lost the next set as Colby-Sawyer's Matt Burke extended the match. Because the team competition had already been decided, they played a super-tiebreaker, won by Burke, 10-8.

Colby-Sawyer (6-9, 2-2 GNAC) closes out the 2019 campaign with home games against Saint Anselm April 14 and against Johnson & Wales April 20.

Regis (7-10, 1-2 GNAC) is scheduled to play three home matches in three days, starting Tuesday, April 16 against UMass Dartmouth at 3:30 p.m.
