Men's Tennis Edges Shorthanded Monmouth (Ill.) In Spring Opener

HAINES CITY, Fla. - The Regis (Mass.) men's tennis team returned to action today, serving up 2018 with a 5-4 win in Florida over shorthanded Monmouth (Ill.) Monday at the Lake Eva Tennis Center.

Regis (6-2) was able to overcome singles defeats in the first three flights to edge the Scots in the final tally and win its seventh straight spring break match. Monmouth (1-7) competed with just four players but nearly pulled off the win.

Doubles play concluded with the Pride up 2-1 after the tandem of Kyle Dugat (Houston, Texas) and Owen Pelissier (Hingham, Mass.) beat Alex Martin (Glenview, Ill.) and Zach Harris (Mascoutah, Ill.) 8-4 on the No. 2 court. This came after Nolan Bebarta (Danville, Calif.) and Johnny Pallotta (Bay Shore, N.Y.) fell 8-1 at first doubles to the Monmouth pair of Landon Walker (Prairieview, La.) and Joseph Shie (Davenport, Iowa) 8-1.

Tim Miller (North Attleboro, Mass.) opened singles play with a dominant 6-1, 6-0 straight set win over Martin which proved to be the match clincher. With Regis earning default wins on the No. 5 and No. 6 courts the win was already in the books. Chris Harrow (North Reading, Mass.) and Cam Charbonneau (Guilford, Conn.)  nearly pulled off wins on the one and three courts, respectively. Both won their opening set only to drop third-set tiebreakers. Luke Horton (Bass Harbor, Maine) fell at second singles to Shie 6-3, 6-1.

The Pride returns to action on Tuesday against Kings (Pa.) at 10:30 a.m. in a match to be held at the USTA National Campus.
