WESTON, Mass. – Capping stellar collegiate careers, seniors Katherine Mariano (Newton, Mass.) and Joshua Unas (Santa Clarita, Calif.) have been named to the 2019 New England Intercollegiate Swimming and Diving Association (NEISDA) All-Sportsmanship Team, announced Friday by the coaches' organization.
Each of the 22 women's teams and 16 men's teams that are members of the NEISDA were eligible to select a student-athlete to represent them on the All-Sportsmanship Team. The honorees are chosen based on their sportsmanship behaviors both in the pool and in the campus community.
Mariano, a co-captain in each of the past two years, specialized in the sprint butterfly and freestyle events. At the 2019 GNAC Championships, she swam the third leg of the 200 medley relay that won the league title with a school record time of 1:52.69, plus she finished fifth in the 100 freestyle and sixth in both the 50 butterfly and 100 butterfly.
Mariano will leave Regis with her name in the top 20 all-time top times list of three events, as she is 12th in the 100 butterfly (1:04.25), 13th in the 50 butterfly (28.66), and 16th in the 100 freestyle (57.66). She is on track to receive her bachelor's degree in nursing and plans to pass the NCLEX exam and work as a nurse in one of Boston's hospitals.
Unas won five GNAC titles this year, sweeping the breaststroke events with victories in the 50 breaststroke, 100 breaststroke, and 200 breaststroke, plus he was part of Pride wins in the 200 medley relay and 400 medley relay. At the NEISDA Championships, he finished seventh in the 100 breaststroke, plus he helped four Regis relay squads finish in the top seven in their respective events.
A captain of this year's men's swimming and diving squad, Unas appears in the Regis career top-times list in 15 different events, ending up third in the 200 breaststroke (2:20.48), 200 individual medley (2:03.48), and 400 individual medley (4:32.36) as well as fourth in the 50 breaststroke (28.61) and 100 breaststroke (1:02.33). He is a nursing major with plans to continue his education at Regis next year.
In 2018-19, the Regis College men's and women's swimming and diving teams each posted a winning dual meet record, finished second at the GNAC Championships, and ended up seventh at the NEISDA Championships.
