Pride Men’s Swim Team Wins Regis Invitational

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College won 14 of 17 individual events as well as both relays to finish ahead of Elms College and Husson University at the Regis Invitational, held Saturday at the Regis Aquatics Center.

Senior Joshua Unas (Santa Clarita, Calif.) and freshman GianCarlos Banrey (Roslindale, Mass.) were victorious in all six events they entered. Unas and Banrey joined with Kevin Dugue (Roslindale, Mass.) and Connor Schwarze (Melrose, Mass.) in winning both the 200 freestyle relay in a season-best time of 1:34.92 and the 200 medley relay in 1:47.30.

In the morning session, Unas finished first in the 50 breaststroke with a season-best time of 29.10 seconds and in the 200 individual medley in 2:06.14, also a season-best time by almost three-and-a-half seconds. In the afternoon, Unas touched the wall first in the 400 individual medley in 4:32.36, defeating teammate Brendan Pike (Weymouth, Mass.) by two full seconds, and in the 100 breaststroke in 1:03.18, yet another season best mark.

Individually, Banrey started his morning with a win in the 100 individual medley in 1:00.32, followed by a victory in the 50 freestyle in 22.86 seconds, 2/100th of a second quicker than his previous best time this year. He electrified the crowd in the afternoon by breaking his own pool record in the 50 butterfly by 0.69 seconds with a winning time of 23.42 seconds, and then he won the 200 butterfly by over 15 seconds with a mark of 2:17.01.

Schwarze took two individual victories, finishing first in the 50 backstroke in 30.17 seconds and in the 100 freestyle in 52.81 seconds. Grant Kollien (Acton, Mass.) also won two events, posting a career-best time in the 500 freestyle with a winning time of 5:01.08 before breaking the pool record by over 10 seconds in the 1650 freestyle, finishing first in 17:43.49.

Dugue cruised to a victory in the 100 backstroke by almost 10 full seconds with a time of 1:03.36. Paul Brennan (Rumford, R.I.) put over 14 seconds between himself and his nearest competitor in the 200 freestyle, posting a personal season-best time of 1:59.43 for the win.

Regis finished with 204 points, ahead of second place Elms with 115 points and third place Husson with 102 points. Edward Capoldo of Elms won both the 100 butterfly and the 200 breaststroke, while Husson's Joe Vail picked up his team's only event victory in the 200 backstroke.

After fall semester finals and the holiday break, Regis will head to Florida for winter training. The Pride will take part in the FIU Sprint Invitational in Miami, Fla., Saturday, Jan. 5.
