GianCarlos Banrey Named GNAC Rookie of Week

WINTHROP, Mass. – With two individual victories while establishing season-best times in both wins, a relay victory, and the best time in a third individual event, GianCarlos Banrey (Roslindale, Mass.) has been named the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Men's Swimming and Diving Rookie of the Week, announced Monday by the league office.

Banrey continues to post impressive performances at the start of his collegiate career. Saturday, he first swam the third (butterfly) leg of the meet-opening 200 medley relay as Regis won the event by 7.5 seconds with a time of 1:47.07.

In individual events, Banrey earned a new season-best time in the 100 butterfly, finishing first in 53.47 seconds. The freshman followed that with a victory in the 100 freestyle in 50.70 seconds, also a season-best mark, and he had the top time in the 50 butterfly at 24.21 seconds, just 1/10th of a second off the pool record he established in the home opener three weeks ago.

This is the first GNAC weekly award and second overall weekly honor for Banrey, as he previously received NEISDA Male Swimmer of the Week recognition Oct. 18. Regis claims the GNAC Rookie of the Week for the second straight time after Kevin Dugue (Roslindale, Mass.) was chosen last week after his performance at Bridgewater State.

The Regis men's swimming and diving team, 2-1 so far in dual meets, returns to the pool Saturday, Nov. 10, for a tri-meet at Babson against the host Beavers and defending GNAC champion Norwich starting at 1 p.m.
