Regis Men’s Swim Team Defeats UNE in Season Opener

WESTON, Mass. – The Regis College men's swimming and diving team opened the 2018-19 season with a convincing 148-73 victory over the University of New England Saturday in a dual meet at the Regis Aquatics Center.

The highlight of the day came from freshman GianCarlos Banrey (Roslindale, Mass.), who set the pool record in the 50 butterfly with a winning time of 24.11 seconds. He broke the previous mark of 24.20 seconds set by Giulian Santos of Bridgewater State last January.

Banrey also won the 100 butterfly in 53.74 seconds and the 100 freestyle in 51.43 seconds. In addition, he joined with Kevin Dugue (Roslindale, Mass.), Joshua Unas (Santa Clarita, Calif.), and Connor Schwarze (Melrose, Mass.) in winning the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:45.08.

Unas, the team captain this year, won the 50 breaststroke in 29.40 seconds and the 100 breaststroke in 1:05.44, plus he posted the best time in the 100 IM at 59.94 seconds. Dugue finished first in the 100 backstroke with a time of 1:02.36, while Schwarze touched the wall first in the 50 freestyle in 24.03 seconds.

Grant Kollien (Acton, Mass.) won both distance events, completing the 1000 freestyle in 11:20.96 and the 500 freestyle in 5:30.84. In the closest race of the day, Brendan Pike (Weymouth, Mass.) won the 200 freestyle in 2:01.14, just ahead of teammate Paul Brennan (Rumford, R.I.) in 2:01.23. Kollien, Pike, Gueincy Clodomir (Pembroke Park, Fla.), and Brennan combined to post the best time in the 200 freestyle relay at 1:42.40.

UNE (0-1) earned its only event victory of the day in the 50 backstroke, as Owen Williams finished first in 27.88 seconds, just ahead of Dugue's time of 28.16 seconds.

Regis (1-0) heads to Bristol, R.I., for the Roger Williams Invitational next Saturday, Oct. 20, beginning at 11 a.m.
