Men’s Soccer Drops Season Finale

WESTON, Mass. – Regis College lost to Johnson & Wales, 5-0, Wednesday afternoon in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference men's soccer match at Regis Stadium.

Johnson & Wales (15-2-1, 10-0-1 GNAC) drew a corner kick three minutes into the match, and Riley Spotton's service into the box was met by Erik Schneider, who sent a header into the back of the net to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. However, that would be the only goal of the first half, as Josh Barrows (Rochester, N.Y.) earned four saves on two shots apiece by John Rioux and Joulien Martinelli.

Less than two minutes into the second half, Rioux drew a foul within the box to create a penalty kick attempt, and he was successful on the opportunity. Just over three minutes later, Nick Gutekunst stole the ball from the Pride defense, eluded Barrows, and blasted the ball into the net, followed by Schneider's second goal of the match in the next minute.

The Wildcats's final goal of the match came in the 68th minute as Esteban Osorio entered the contest and made an immediate impact, following up his own shot with another attempt that crossed the goal line. Regis created an opportunity to get on the scoreboard in the 79th minute with a corner kick chance, but Norman Quilichini's (San Juan, Puerto Rico) shot sailed wide left.

Johnson & Wales finished with 26 shots, including 16 shots on goal, as Barrows finished with five saves in just over 58 minutes of action before being replaced by Ivan Ramirez (San Juan, Puerto Rico), who made six saves in 31:48. Austin Scoggin started in goal for the Wildcats and was credited with two saves in 73:13, while Jacob Friedman played the final 16:47 without needing to make a save.

With the victory, Johnson & Wales clinch the top seed in the upcoming GNAC Tournament and will host a first round match Saturday, Nov. 2.

Regis sees its season end with a 4-13 overall record, including a 2-9 mark within the conference. Before the match, seniors Jared Barroso (Central Falls, R.I.), Scott Holcomb (Natick, Mass.), Daniel Montoya (Revere, Mass.), Ken Niyonzima (Dracut, Mass.), and Branden Tan (Bodrum, Turkey) were honored in a Senior Day presentation.
